  1. Brompton with a Heinzmann conversion will go up and down hills all day long and probably outlast any any other conversion on the market. Not cheap but probably the best.
  2. Alfine or nexus or sturmey add a Schlumph Mmountain drive to your Alfine or any other hub and it gives you a complete set of lower gears very cost effective with the Sturmey 8 speed combo im thinking about doing with my brompton. Alex
  3. roholf dropouts Do a search on Kinetics I believe they do a dropout converter Alex
  4. Alternative uses I use my bikes purely for health and leisure activity and my wife and I both have cars which are used for work and shopping or traveling longer distances on roads where cycling is unsuitable Alex
  5. grumblers Get over it, its a great bike,it does what the people want and I thought we lived in a democracy, more power to the alien
  6. Versatile A Brompton folding bike would be ideal for the boot of the car and could be purchased within your price band. No electrical assistance but should you wish to add there are lots of ways to do it. As Flecc and the guys say no standard assisted bike is likely to meet your requirements. I love my bromptons style and simplicity and its a doddle to fold and unfold from the boot of a small car. I also have a Smarta ebike which I rarely use. I am currently saving up for a Roholf hub and Heinzmann power assist for my Brompton. Good luck in your quest Alex
  7. I will second that,motion carried. Alex
  8. Reason Choosing your bike is a very personal thing as we all know one mans meat is anothers poison. Trust me when you find the right bike price will not be an issue. Reason and logic fly out the window and you are going to love it when you find it. Alex
  9. Purely on what I see on this forum, the following lead by example. Wisper should be applauded as a manufacturer 50 cycles as a retailer Both go the extra mile for the customer Alex
  10. Pl250 Ht Its actualy a 350 revamped to 250w hence the HT. Which I imagine most large manufacturers will follow. Alex
  11. Aurora Another Aurora convert. Alex
  12. Choice As a consumer I have no issue with those who wish to use pedalecs upto 250w But lets not pretend the B27 is a 250w when its really a 350w with a 48v battery repackaged to comply with current legislation and get one over other producers. So lets get the blinkers off and all play to the same rules. Should a consumer wish to use this bike I dont have an issue so long as the law is complied with. And therein lies the problem, the law as it stands allows loopholes like the B27 and yet the Aurora is illegal. Bikes should be restricted to 15mph but can we please have it available on hills and also with throttle control for town usage as a safety requirement. Modern systems can acheive this so I suggest the 250w regulation is where the problem lies . Alex
  13. Decision So whats it going to be A bucket of salt or an expansive open mind? Alex
  14. Great to see a development like this taking place in the UK all be it with German bikes. But pound for pound the Alien Aurora would get my vote at present. With the continued entry of some big players entering the ebike market the future for sophisticated development augers well and should stimulate growth and competition which we will all benefit from. Alex
  15. Progress The Americans market what everyone really wants while in Europe the politicians get involved and we the British comply as usual. The French and Germans do not give a hoot and do what they want and continue to supply what the customer demands. The exceptions here are companies like Alien Ocean and I applaud there initiative. If I were in the market for a non folding bike they would be my first choice as the Aurora tops anything else available. I have no connection with Alien. Alex
  16. varied selection lovely selection of bikes Jerry Alex
  17. Good Question In theory use a nominal max figure of £1000 for the purchase of the donor bike and max £1000 for the e conversion. If you had the free funds what would you choose. Idealy I would prefer rear hub e conversion ruling out alfine hubs etc. Or with a crank drive conversion alfine hubs would be ok but not sure about availability of affordable crank drive system. It would be essential for the conversion to have good hill climbing ability which I believe rules out front drive hubs. Alex
  18. lipo4 Thanks Dave lipo 4 sounds the way to go with the Aurora particularly from a cost standpoint. I have included the Aurora in my shortlist of suitable bikes. Alex
  19. This is a very well organised forum and the upgrade would be another plus. Delighted to help Alex
  20. Thankyou for your response Many thanks everyone for your considered response it is much appreciated. My present bike has throttle assist and it looks like I will have to stay with it and forego my intended purchase of the Kalkhoff which is no longer suitable for my usage. Seasons greetings to all. Alex
  21. I have noticed on 50 Cycles kalkhoff 2011 that none of there bikes have throttle assist which for those of us who may have physical or medical conditions may not find them so suitable. Surely this is a backward step as other manufacturers seem to still be building bikes with throttle assist. Have I got it wrong and if not what are the best alternatives. Alex
  22. a xmas wish thanks grumpy From the powerpedals site At the same power (W), the Central Driven System gets higher torque than a hub motor. As you can see in chart A, the 200W central driven system motor performs better than a 350W hub motor, the torque of the 200W central driven system is equal to 500W hub motors, Is this claim realistic or purely sales jargon
  23. a xmas wish flecc thank you for your input. I reckon the perfect bike isnt possible but on a realistic level what do you reckon is the best option with minimal personal input. Assuming the required personal input is 100 is there a combination that could work at 50
  24. a xmas wish OTH im looking for the same thing. My current bike is great on the flat and slight hills but beyond that its really a non runner for me and limits its usage. I enjoy putting in some pedaling but not at a very high rate for medical reasons and I love getting out and about. If I could get up the 1 in 4 hills around here under throttle alone and varied assistance for lesser hills it would open up a whole new world of possibilities. It would be great to know what bikes can meet my needs. Spec folding frame for better storage as I stay in a flat good hill climbing motor with throttle function reasonable range of gears to enjoy the flat bits without assist funds upto £1500 would even be willing to do a self build kit so long as its not to complicated.
