Solid State Batteries
Just when you thought that battery technology couldn't be improved upon. Long time to wait for us tho. At least we have left SLA behind. My comuter bike is heavy enough with lithium but we just heard yesterdaythat work will be moving 4 miles closer to home, hurrah! I have to wait till they have built the new building tho - in 2016. D'oh!

Is this Pedelec P*rn?
Is that all you've got? Englishmen! Where is your fight? I was in fear and trembling coming back to this thread tonight. Will no one here admit to taking that post even a little seriously? The responses I expected where a gnashing of teeth toward me! What's this pathetic joking? Listen, I'll use up all my off topic allowance and tell you a secret. Those 2 quotes I lifted out of my bible actually are very rare in their tone. It seems to me they are there only to grab our attention. Nothing more. The whole of the rest of the bible writings, apart from these hard texts, is the sweetest stuff you ever did come across. Makes sense if God is love. Now, if when I said "STOP!" in my post you felt even a hint of fear and trembling, then I should take that as a sign that I did actually put my finger on something real. If one of you dares to admit so much, then may I urge, will you dare to take me on and read the multitude of other sweet, gracious, lovely, delightful, nourishing, delicious, awesome writing that is the rest of the bible, which is his counsel to his dear, fallen creation? "Come now, let us reason together. Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool." Isaiah Tell me that is not the sweetest thing you ever read in the English language. This is how it is with a man who finds that he is reading the scriptures as though he were a little child on the knee of his father. Regards Paul Goodwin

Is this Pedelec P*rn?
"Drink water from your own well" and "whoever looks at a woman lustfully has committed adultery already" are just 2 quotes from our old bible. Gents, you are risking her whom you hold dear, along with her children, not to say your very lives with this indulgence. Believe me, I know...

How long should my ebike chain last?
I agree, a wiider chain has to be better. I do believe track bikes have the wider 1/8" size, the phychology being that those guys with enormous thigh muscles think that they would snap the chain if if was any narrower! But 1/8" used to be the norm before the demand for ever more sprockets at the rear. My old Raleigh 20 with steel chainwheel and cotter pins has the wider size. The steel chainwheel is surely going to be harder wearing than a lightweight alloy one, and with the internal gear hub rather than a derailleur the chain line is always going to be spot on making for better longevity of chain and sprockets.

Taking a Tongxin motor apart.
Appreciate the responses. Yes like that Amiga, but with silver stainless spokes. It came from Edinburgh. Jerry, did you manage to get hold of the special ring tool needed to remove the gearing? You need to get the gearing component out before the armature can be removed. I don't suppose the gear wheels can be removed without this bit of kit? Is it pricey I wonder? Must admit over volting is looking tons easier at this point... I have the sum total of 3 wheel builds under my belt to date. They're all still true so far but they do use meaty mtb rims... The latest I did was for my old trek 26" mtb to which I retro fitted a disc brake at the front. I had my LBS braze a caliper mount on the forks. The sense of acheivement is grand, hence the desire to tinker with this little motor. For those who like to tinker with bikes, it's worth mentioning the mine of bike related information that is the Sheldon Brown website. regards all, Paul

Taking a Tongxin motor apart.
I am considering if a rewind is possible for this motor. Having just bought a used Tongxin off eBay in rather a hurry, I ended up with a 190rpm motor. It's laced into a 700c wheel at the moment but I want to use it on my old Raleigh 20 in a 20" wheel. I reckon I may achieve about 11 mph on 36v. I could over volt it but already have bought cells for a battery build. On this issue some say that it's best just to get the speed of motor you need, that a rewind for a different speed done on a motor designed for a particular speed, results in an inefficient motor. BUT, my thinking here is that this same physical motor is already available in different speed options so it should be possible to DIY convert between different speeds for a given voltage. If I reduce the number of turns and wind with a heavier guage wire to handle the increase in current it should work out okay. If I look and see how many turns I have and then reduce that number in proportion to the increase in rpm I want to achieve Anyone mad enough to try this here? Paul

Greetings from North Manchester
Hello there, I've been lurking here for ages and now feel I've picked up enough about ebiking to think about joining in the conversation. Followed Jerry Simon's adventures with the Tongxin kit and thanks to those threads I bought a used one off eBay with the hope of fitting on a Raleigh 20 (funds can't stretch to a brompton I'm afraid). It's in a 700c wheel ATM so needs relacing into a 20 inch rim as a first job, then I'm wondering if a rewind is possible to change it from 190rpm to say around 260rpm... But I'm getting ahead if myself. regards all Paul Goodwin, Oldham
