Cycle Commute below zero?
I love cycling in the cold crisp mornings. It's the wet windy ones I hate. I agree, I have a pair of studded tyres, and I've never used them. We don't have the ice/snow consistency to justify changing them over. As long as you take it easy, then standard tyres do fine. As for gloves, if it's really cold, I wear a pair of surgical gloves under my warm ones. Toasty, but proper sweaty when you arrive at work.

Does anyone own a Momentum Electric Bike?
Hi David I've owned a Momentum Electric Upstart for 2 years I think. I bought it second hand, and it had been modifyied. The torque sensor was ditched as the seller said it wasn't responsive enough. He fitted a throttle controller in its place. I enjoy riding it & put about 500 miles into it over 1 year. The battery would get me a good 20-30 miles too. I recently upgraded the hub gear to a Shimano Nexus 7 as I still like to ride unassisted quite a bit, and the Automatix hub was a little limiting up hills. I wish i could have tried the torque sensing sytem as I've heard its great but a throttle suits me fine. I found the whole bike really study but quite a hard ride on rough roads, due to its weight. Battery Connector Woes...
Ok. Got 6 miles in & a stutter & then 5 mins later, dead again. Limped 'fixie' style home and took the car. Checked out all the connectors and everything seemed ok. Took the battery out of it's case and looked at the connector. It has 2 large red/black wires and also 2 red/black small wires. 5 connection poles in total but only 4 used. The small black wire had come off on the battery side and needed resoldering. Did this and everything seems fine again, for now. A couple of questions i have is that 1: what are the 2 small wires for? They don't Seem to connect to anything on the connecting block & 2: one the soldered joint that failed there was some glue/ silicon type substance, I imagine to strengthen the joint. What would that be?

Battery Connector Woes...
Thanks Guys. To be honest I've never knelt by the connector when placing the battery, so it may well have done that before. Fixed connector and new throttle, Done. Mobile again

Battery Connector Woes...
OK. All back together, now when I pop the battery into position I seem to get a click/ possible spark. Any ideas why? & is it a problem ?

Battery Connector Woes...
Cheers Trex. Looks like I have success, for now....

Battery Connector Woes...
Thanks for the swift reply. Both slots have a little corrosion. Dismantled and there are no springs, just gripped by tension. I've tried to bend them back to create tension. Is there any way to clean the corrosion?

Battery Connector Woes...
I've a momentum Upstart with a 36V 9 Ah Battery. Been working fine and came to it the other day and nothing. No power at all, no power to the hard wired light. Checked the battery. Fine Checked the connections on the bike. Fine. Seems like no power at all to the controller. Then check the connector situated on the battery. When I did a volt test on the battery I had to put some wire into the connectors as they are recessed. When I attach the battery to the bike and check the other side of the connectors there is no voltage. So I'm assuming it is the 'pinch' connector pictured. The 2 outer poles are the ones used to transfer the voltage. They do look pitted but if I place a bare wire in each and test it, the battery seems fine. Once connected to the bike then nothing. Is it something I could replace or clean up? The connections are still tight and I'm concerned about dismantling it further in case it won't go back. Any ideas ?

Hi Chopin I was in the same boat as you, with lots of enthusiam & little knowledge or money. 2 years ago I moved from a quick 2 miles hop to a 22 mile commute. Jerry gave me some great advice, but I loved my Brompton too much to electrify it. I thought that I'd try and save for another & do what you've done. In the end I got a full size second hand Momentum electric to see if electric biking was for me. I love it. I'd be interested to see your build and see what setup and probelms you had. Welcome.

Hi D8veh Are you suggesting a new controller rather than the e-crazyman I already have? I was going to get a watt meter in the mix somewhere and wondered if any of the LCD monitors would give me battery info ? Also, I'd like to delimit the motor from 15.5 to get about 17-18mph. Is this possible?

I have the E-Crazyman EB306 controller matched to the 8FUN SWXK 36V250W motor. I've read a little about the e-crazyman contollers being programmable, but can't find anything specific to the EB306. I'd also like a LCD Display monitor. Is there any that you could recommend from BMS ?

Hi all I've been lurking this board for a couple of years now and recently had some advice for d8veh & earlier Jerry Simon. So I thought it was only polite that i introduce myself at last. Forstly this forum is amazing & special thanks to the to posters I've mentioned for their time and advice so far. I'm in the NW and do a 22 mile round trip commute every day, country lanes and A roads. I've a second hand modified / butchered (take your pick), Momentum Electric Upstart with a throttle, disconnected tourque sensing bottom bracket and replacement controller from what I can see. All mods were done by the previous owner. The battery gets me the whole round trip and more on one charge, so I'm more than happy. I also own a Brompton which I like to electrify one day, but funds are lacking. I got the Upstart as a cheapish way into electric biking and love it. Looking into ways to improve performance and tweak a few things to make my commute slightly faster & more comfortable. Hope to learn to build my own conversion one day, but using this forum to improve my knowledge and confidence. Thanks Steve

Throttle Wiring
Thanks D8veh. That was my fear. I'll pick up a couple of spare throttles from BMS now I've found them. Thanks for the help.

Throttle Wiring
Ok all back together, No flailing wires, Bike seems to work fine but only the Power on (RED) led works and not the others. No idea why. I can live with it as I know the power of my battery and it has an indicator on it but I'm just curious why it wouldn't light up ?

Throttle Wiring
Cheers d8veh. In the inspection process the red has detached too, So I'm popping it back where it should be. Any ideas where I can get a replacement throttle? I think i'd like to have a spare to hand. This site is fab. Thankyou

Throttle Wiring
OK second attempt. Thanks so far d8veh. Red and black soldered to the same pad & intact. Blue wire was the one floating around. Numbered all the pads for clarity.

Throttle Wiring
Hi, Recently got some help on here with relocating the spring in my throttle & now I need some wiring info. The Blue Wire has become disconnected and the 3 leds do no light up anymore. I can live with them not working but don't really want that wire flapping around. I can't see where the wire has come from. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance.

Replacement throttle
Just logged in to thank you & the instructions are there! Once you said it could be dismantled i tried again & and it fell apart in my hands. I was certainly less tentative knowing it could be dismantled. Thanks for the help. Will be on again soon for tips & tweaks for a 36v 8funSWXK motor twinned with an ecrazyman controller. Thanks again.

Replacement throttle
I was going to but it seems very delicate & thought if I screwed it up I'd be stranded. Will take a closer look later.

Replacement throttle
Currently using a butchered / modified (depends on how you look at it ) Momentum Upstart. It has a thumb throttle but the spring is slack so I want to replace it. I've attached a picture. I need to know where the best place to source one is? Happy to order from china if necessary. Thanks in advance.
