Ambient temperature effect on motor temperature?

Featured Replies

I was riding up a prolonged steep hill today on my Tonaro Esprit and found that my motor got hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold your hand on, or put another way it was bl..dy hot.

It was 33 degrees C at the time, how big a factor would that be to the motors temp, as I have never managed to get the motor more than warm in the past.

It makes a fair bit of difference. The rate at which heat is lost from the motor depends on the difference in temperature between the motor and the air temperature. The warmer the air temperature, the lower the heat loss rate and the hotter the motor will run. If you have the added factor of sun shining on the motor that will also makes things worse, as the motor will get some additional heat directly from the sun, maybe adding a few more degrees to the case temperature.

I think it might well be possible to get, say, a 20 to 30 deg increase in motor case temperature (for the same riding conditions) when the air temperature goes from an overcast 20 deg C to a sunny 33 deg C. A 20 deg case temperature rise would make the motor feel a lot hotter than normal, as we are pretty sensitive to small temperature differences when touching things.

Upside of riding in high temps is battery range which seems to increase significantly...really noticed this in Tuscany during the summer with temps over 40.......

We will never have that benefit here. They will never have the watercooling effect to the same as level as we do .
