December 17, 201510 yr Looking through the instruction manual there does appear to be the option through 'settings' in the display to change wheel size. However, your'e saying this is only something a dealer can change? If your bike has the small, basic display, you can't change it yourself, and would need a device from the shop. If your bike has the larger, more advanced display (showing for instance remaining miles), then you can change it yourself through the settings.
December 17, 201510 yr The impulse 2.0 250w had an annoying clank on revs which was a bit worrying. All others were quiet. A few people owning a Kalkhoff bike with an impulse 2.0 motor have had the clacking/clanking issue (including me), and their motor replaced as a consequence. There is a separate thread on this, on this website.
December 17, 201510 yr Author hard work getting a police chase these days You'll just have to try harder! Late night rider you!

You can change the wheel diameter in both the small and large displays but it made no difference to the speed limiter - just made the speedo under read. On the S models you can change speed too although I don't think it'd make much difference.

I wonder how many of the 160000 units of impulse motors apparently sold have been faulty?
December 17, 201510 yr Author Going to call dvla shortly. Premium number no doubt... Grrrr... Will keep you all posted
December 17, 201510 yr Going to call dvla shortly. Premium number no doubt... Grrrr... Will keep you all posted Don't spend too much on that call, I doubt they'll tell you anything useful. It's their Vehicle Inspectorate who do know what's needed, and at present as said, it's not possible on any existing production machine. The couple or so who have achieved it have had to change the tyres to m/c spec ones, the lighting to moped units and a host of other changes. Basically the bikes become mopeds then, unsurprising since they have to satisfy the Low Powered Moped specifications for 15 mph assist or full moped specifications for higher assist speeds up to 30 mph. .
December 17, 201510 yr Author Spoke to Police and to DVLA. Police wouldn't get involved unless a criminal matter or was being driven without registration when it needed one. They didn't really know what the requirements were for EPAC. DVLA - they agreed the wording was confusing but on their guidelines from 2014 it says 'must' where as the 2015 guidelines on their website say 'shouldn't'. I did ask if their guidelines were out of date but was told they were current and they'll look into changing the wording on the website.
December 17, 201510 yr There used to be only the supernova M99 light that had the s-pedelec seal of approval now B+M have a couple too. 290 € all the same for the supernova which does have the advantage of coming with brake light switches. The supernova rear light has brake light and numberplate light function built in. B+M have rear lights that are approved I think I would mount two and use one of them as a brake light. B+M make an s-pedelec approved rear view mirror. Schwalbe have s-pedelec approved tyres in certain sizes - 26" and 27.5" IIRC In France you need a moped horn, pretty easy to find on a wrecked scooter and hook it up via a DC/DC 12V converter. And of course a numberplate holder. And there you go, proud owner of a moped... All of the above kit needs to bear the approval numbers which from what I have seen are the same for s-pedelec and moped - they come from the machinery directive norms I think flecc?
December 18, 201510 yr Thanks tomato. You can change the wheel diameter in both the small and large displays Maybe on the latest models, but I have an Impulse 2 bike, and the small display does not allow to change any settings (apart from miles to km as units).

If you press and hold the select button then select drive and it's under one of those settings. Unless I'm getting confused you can change on both the impulse 2 and newer model. Is that correct?

All of the above kit needs to bear the approval numbers which from what I have seen are the same for s-pedelec and moped - they come from the machinery directive norms I think flecc? The problem here in the UK is that the S pedelecs aren't recognised, so any of those S pedelec approvals carry no meaning with the DVLA's Vehicle Inspectorate. In fact the opposite, since any mention of the high speed pedelec class prompts the DVLA into very negative mode. I don't know the position regarding the machinery directives or how they stand with regard to vehicle classes. I do know however how difficult it was for the very few who have managed to get moped acceptance here, and that they've said it wasn't worth it in the end. It makes no sense to even try at the moment while the status of the L1e-A and L1e-B moped replacement classes is still under discussion and the new Type Approval requirements for them haven't been finalised. We do know that the draft contains some welcome L1e-A easements which might survive to the final document, so it makes sense to wait for that. It shouldn't be very long since it's already overdue. .
January 28, 201610 yr I've been reading up on these and have read that they have pedal assist up to about 17mph. Also, that it's possible to change wheel circumference in the settings menu. Can anyone confirm if this is true? Thanks:) Did you manage to change wheel circumference on your impulse 2.0 ??
January 28, 201610 yr Author Did you manage to change wheel circumference on your impulse 2.0 ?? - unless I'm getting confused I think so, (tried all the different versions in the shop) but it didn't make any difference to speed. It did make the display misread though.
January 29, 201610 yr If you press and hold the select button then select drive and it's under one of those settings. Unless I'm getting confused you can change on both the impulse 2 and newer model. Is that correct? Nope, not correct. I have a Pro Connect 10 bike, with the "basic" display, and the only available setting to change is whether distance is showing in miles or km. No other settings are available from the bike computer, although I understand there is a programming box that can be connected to the motor to change other settings.

January 29, 201610 yr Have you tried holding buttons down for a couple of seconds? This gets you into another menu and from there you can make changes to wheel circumference etc There is no menu on the basic Kalkhoff computer provided on those bikes/models. This is the model I have, and I am pretty sure no other settings, apart from miles/kms, can be changed: http://www.kalkhoff-bikes.com/fileadmin/Media/Images/E-Bike-Info/img_quadrat_IMPULSE_display_LCD-compact.jpg I am sure you understand by now that you are talking about a different model/computer? January 29, 201610 yr Author Understood - thank you I must have got confused with the different models! I've ended up going with a Bosch instead. It should arrive soon, hoping it compares well with the Kalkhoffs.
January 31, 201610 yr Understood - thank you I must have got confused with the different models! I've ended up going with a Bosch instead. It should arrive soon, hoping it compares well with the Kalkhoffs. Which Bosch.. .? What did it offer over the Kalkhoff?
January 31, 201610 yr Author Which Bosch.. .? What did it offer over the Kalkhoff? A CX motor with the 500wh battery on a cube bike. The main thing it had over the kalkhoffs was price. £1500 as opposed to at least 2.5k.
February 1, 201610 yr I wonder which one it is, as I haven't seen many Cube bikes with a CX motor sold at £1500 (nor does the Kalkhoff entry models start at £2.5K either)...
February 1, 201610 yr Author It's the cube reaction hybrid pro. Bit of a long name! It retails at £1800 but there's a bit of room for negotiation. I ordered mine with different tyres, a badass dongle, paniers and mudguards for £1690 delivered. My LBS gave me the price of 1500 but I went with ebike power as they matched the price and could supply all the above. They seemed a lot more experienced with ebikes too. They said the latest it would arrive would be tomorrow. We shall see! The cheapest price I found for the kalkhoff Integrale was about £2200 form Europe. I got the impression 50 cycles would do their best to match it, their best price for an ex-demo was £2400. The older kalkhoffs can be bought new for around £1600 from Europe. I don't understand why UK prices are so much more than Europe for Kalkhoff. It's not like that s for the Cube bikes.
February 1, 201610 yr can you report on the performance of the CX motor when you start riding,i was considering but can`t find a private riders opinion.
February 1, 201610 yr Author can you report on the performance of the CX motor when you start riding,i was considering but can`t find a private riders opinion. I will. Will also review ebike - power. If you scroll down to the bottom of this page there's a review of the cube with the CX. It's in German but there's subtitles: http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/which-one.23171/page-2

Sounds like a great price, and the Cube bikes seem very close to Kalkhoff in term of quality and equipment. I can't find a website for "ebike power", do they have one? Regarding Kalkhoff, there is always an opportunity to negociate prices with 50 cycles too...
