E-Bike suitable for towing Special Needs Trailer

Don't worry. SW has a different kind of 'off road' in mind.

When you say 'off road' I take it you mean 'not actually on a road'. Possibly some gravel and the odd puddle.

SW is thinking about full suspension, rocks/roots/jumps/berms, adrenaline, broken bones and high fives all round dude!

In short, a throttle will assist you to move away from a standing start.

Yeh your on the right lines Alan lol

Defiantly not "SW is thinking about full suspension, rocks/roots/jumps/berms, adrenaline, broken bones and high fives all round dude!"

not much point in full sus if toeing a trailer is there tbh and be well over budget.

would be better with a more powerful bafang mid drive but he does not want to self build to save on cost.

best option is to try some first and then make his mind up.

There doesn't seem to be any shops around us that stock these sort of bikes! our local shop starts @£2k for the "Whyte Coniston"

I think I'm going to have to research online then order online & hope to god I've made a suitable choice, has with our daughters dissabilities & health problems we aren't really in a situation to be travelling all over the place looking at bikes :-(

Has anyone else got any feedback on these Cube e-bikes that Soundwave has posted links on?
If you are riding a bike on your own, with no throttle that's one thing. You can always screech to a halt, throw it the ground and run away.

If you are towing a vulnerable person behind, likely using a throttle, it's a different matter.

The throttle has to break for the bike to be out of control. With a modern EN15194 legal kit the throttle can't work if the pedals are not turning. And in most of the world the speed with a throttle is limited to 6 km/h. Are we seeing that the British throttle exception is in fact a pedelec safety risk? Ah Ha ! The plot thickens!

If you do have an out of control motor pull hard on both hydraulic brake levers and the motor will make a loud popping noise with lots of smoke... If it went out of control it was broken already so no loss!

It might be a daft idea, but I wonder if there is a way or even a system that has the trailer as the powered unit and not the bike, with the controls operated from the bike.

Dreaming here... A low geared dual drive system with a large battery.

The best solution is of course out of budget (way, way, way out).

The main failing of this model is the motor (Bionix yuck!!!)

But the idea could be adapted to another type of cargo trike. And the rider and passenger can communicate more easily.

ezee bikes with front hub motors tow trailers perfectly OK for more than 10 years. The 180mm BPM motors are perhaps not as well built as the Ezee motors but there is not much difference in it on torque.

The Big Bear has also a very potent Lishui 20A controller with 9 FETs, not many hub bikes have 9 FETs. It pulls twice as much as your average bike with 120mm front hub motor at low speed.

Woosh start using a more compact 140mm BPM and reduced the power to 18A sinewave on the rear hub motor Santana2 to avoid breaking spokes.

Off road and up hill in the wet? I contend that you want a well balanced trailer applying at least a little weight on the tow-bar and rear wheel drive in those conditions. I am not questioning the towing power of the models you have cited, just the physics of having the motor in the rear wheel instead of the front on greasy going.

Yes the rider is helping the motor by turning the back wheel and the bike is in essence 2WD but it is at the back wheel you need the most thrust when that is where the weight is. Trust the farmers son's first hand knowledge...

I accept that front drive is not good on steep hills when the road is wet.

I suggested the crank driven woosh Bali to fit within the OP's initial £1,000 budget but it's not a proven solution. The BPM motor is.

Just found out that there is CubeBikesNortheast about an hour away from us! So we're going to have a look at these two that Soundwave mentioned!

Anyone else have any opinions on this or any other bike? I want to get the most suitable bike for the money witch looks like it's going to have to be getting towards £2k now :-(

Money is tight but I need to get the right bike the first time round

-Bucks- where do you live?

you should try an Ezee bike or a BPM bike with full throttle before you buy.

Unless your name is Wiggins, it's not easy to tow a heavy trailer up a steep hill when you don't have a throttle. The throttle allows you to choose power at whatever speed.

You can't do that with SW's bikes.

What is BPM as I can't seem to find the info on them, to be honest I don't really like the look of the Whoosh & Ezee bikes etc, I like the ones that look more like a proper mountain bike, do I really need a full throttle? Up till now I've managed using full pedal power, so I would recon these power assisted would make a big difference if they put in 3-4 times the effort that I do?

I do really appreciate all your advice :-)
