Nyon and SMS text messages...

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

First of all allow me to introduce myself. I'm David, living in the center of Belgium and have just bought my first pedelec. I opted for an e-MTB, a Trek Powerfly+ 9 with optional Nyon display.

I'm defenitely not here to bash the Nyon ;), I know it isn't perfect, but it has worked quite well for me. With its 8Gb, I can load maps for several countries (for when I travel) and the fitness info is motivating :). I also appreciate that I can download bike routes to it, a feature that I use quite a bit.

Now for my question :) ;

I use my bike as main transportation to get to work every day. The Nyon tells me when a text message from my Phone comes in however it doesn't display it. It tells me to stop to read the actual message. So the last time I received a text while biking, I decided to stop and see if the Nyon would display the tekst message.... Nothing... Then while stopped I searched the interface for an option to read the text message.... Nothing to be found...

I know, I know, I can just stop and grab my Phone to read the text message, however when I bike the Phone is tucked away safely in a large backpack which I use when biking to work and back. So it would mean, stopping, getting off the bike, searching through the backpack... etc...

My question; Is there any way to actually read the message on the Nyon???

Thanks :)

David

Hi David,

I'm not familiar with Nyon, but.............

How about using a phone app to read the message to you via a bluetooth earpiece/headset mounted in your helmet (you do wear a helmet?) I adapted my BT Interphone motorcycle headset. Its lightweight, comfortable and works really well, allowing me to take/make calls on the move and using a speech app it reads text messages to me too. I also use it to link to my GSM/Navigation. (My phone, mounted on the stem) The earpieces are permanently mounted in the helmet, you might need to cut a small amount of padding out to fit the earpieces and the boom mike can be folded back when not in use. The unit, mounted on the side of the helmet is controlled by a single dial, it only takes a couple of minutes to learn its functions. See here. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BT-Bluetooth-Interphone-Motorbike-Motorcycle-Helmet-Intercom-Headset-500M-NEW-UK-/141955867388?hash=item210d3aa2fc:g:4Z0AAOSw9KpW~jC7

OR you could just use a cable hands free kit run to the phone in your pocket..........use the same speech app. I have a windows phone and use the Cortana app, but Android and iPhone have similar apps.

Hope that helps.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for the reply. Your solution is good however it's yet another device to remember, to charge, etc...and I will most likely forget to start the app on my Phone before the bike trip :).

As I already have the Nyon it seems a good idea to use that in order to read my messages, however I haven't figured out how to do so :)

Thanks for the advice though :)

My cyclo mio 505 displays text messages, however, trying to read them whilst moving is nigh on suicidal!
