Hi all, this is a great place to find information about ebike, thanks all in advanced.

I was looking for light weight ebike (folding) but it seems what I am looking for is not there. So I was thinking to go for the converting route. First I have Dahon vitess D8 which I love, so I am thinking to convert this or even buy Brompton and do the same. For Brompton I found information about nano kit but I have also been told that it will weight around 17kg so not light anymore. I found the following websites which offer attactive solution either for my Dahon or if I buy Brompton, but I have no idea which one is the best or whether they are good for what I want. Also I would like to be able to fit it myself (no experience what so ever). I only need an ebike for 5-10mils on full charge but some hills around. Thank you

These are not good in the wet and I doubt their capacity to climb hills (I rode a Vélosolex for many years) and they eat tyres.

 

A small front hub motor and a tiny battery would do what you need. Maybe you should ask insat for a quote on a custom 6-8 Ah battery which you would put in a bag on the handlebars of your Dahon?

Thanks Anotherkiwi, I did and the estimate was for 9ah battery was around £750 and with delivery charges will be £850 as no one near by doing that.

I also was thinking to buy Brompton with nano conversion but the cost will be around £1850-£1950. I am not sure whether it is a good idea or perhaps better to wait for the NEW Brompton ekectric bike (not sure when it will come).

 

So as I have no experience in fitting electric conversion I thought

the above kits may be easier to fit and can transform my Dahon to even much better bike.

there is a relationship between weight and comfort for electric folding bikes. Greater comfort lets you ride faster and longer, contributing also to your safety.

This is a Mxus motor, £449 + £32 shipping. I have a similar rear wheel kit and have done 3200 km with it. It is going to add 2.7 kg to your bike but you can take the battery off (2.5 kg). The battery can be put where you want on the bike, I would put it in a bag on the handlebars or on the rack.

 

The wheel will need to be checked after about 100 miles and the spokes tightened. You will need to buy an 8 speed freewheel if you choose the rear motor about £20.

That is what your Dahon will weigh converted without the battery... And just over 16 kg with. That is a very light bike. Where are you going to be lifting it?

 

Into car, remove battery lift 14 kg into car.

Fair enough, I have not had any problems dealing with Banggood and if you research the brand name of the bike it is pretty well respected for a Chinese company mainly doing electronic products.

The battery is removable to lower weight further or to take the battery in for charging without the bike, it is torque senor assist so you have to pedal to get power.

 

Dillinger seems to be very hit or miss, I have read a fair number of complaints about them in the past, hopefully time has improved their support.

Oh look! A battery in a bag... :rolleyes: That looks like a Q85 motor from bmsbattery.

 

Small problem: every time you remove the bag you have to unplug the wires to the controller, believe me you will be bored with that about the second or third time. If they have 3.5 kg with battery then they are probably using power tool batteries. That isn't a bad thing.

There are several of these new motors coming out. They are very interesting in concept, nobody here knows what they are like on the road because they don't exist yet.

 

Expensive but made in Europe. Lots of attention to detail. If you can wait until November go for it! You will be our beta tester and have to take lots of photos and write reams about installing it on your Dahon :) You will probably have a whole load of pedelecers PMing you to ask if they can come and have a ride too!

 

Personally I would opt for the larger battery - one thing we all agree on here is claimed range is always exaggerated.

will see, at the moment go-e looks as it is very simple to install comparing to add-e, and without any damage to my bike if I hate it and would like to remove it. but not sure yet :(

There's a Youtube review of the Add-E by an American guy, who's reviewed a lot of bikes and seems to know what he's talking about. he didn't seem too impressed:

thanks for the link, I saw it yet the main concern is the installation seems complicated compared to go-e. I know that they are not ideal but at least you can remove them easly and use the bike as a normal bike. Still not decided between the two or even something else. thanks again
