June 7, 20205 yr Hi, I have an older style electric bike which is a Smarta bike (9 years old now) it has served me well over the years and although noisier than a brushless motor it has been very reliable. I would like to change the front hub motor before it packs up and so the question is can i do so and the reason i am asking is that i don't see a large control box on this bike. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you.
June 7, 20205 yr A hub motor change to brushless means not only a new hub but also controller kit with lcd, if you have a three wire PAS then that should work. Brushless is three phase, brushed is two phase. Bike pics ? Edited June 7, 20205 yr by Nealh
June 8, 20205 yr Controller is in the compartment underneath the battery. It works then it will likely continue to do so, if you want a quieter hub then you need a sensored/sinewave hub and controller kit.

June 8, 20205 yr Author Hi ye I knew where it was and was about to take pictures of it to show you what the controller was like when the phone went had to take it important call. Thanks for the help as suspected i will be probably better just going for a newer model of Ebike or do you think other wise?
June 8, 20205 yr Your choice, if you like fiddling and like the bike conversion will be about £250 or so using the existing battery. A new bike about £1000 from Kudos or Woosh.

June 8, 20205 yr Author Looking at this Mid-drive kit as a possible option if i changed the front wheel and the rear wheel so that there is a different gear system on the bike it should work. June 8, 20205 yr A new front motor like a modern Aikema for 100mm forks is about £65 or a complete wheel £80 plus delivery, a controller kit about £60 plus delivery buy both from the same shop and delivery will be combined. Duty will be about £20 - £25 from a China vendor all in all about £198, if you want a motor built motor wheel then add another £90 odd quid.

I am inclined to go for the middrive as i have to cycle up steep hills daily and i also have big pannier bags which can be full with shopping or produce from the farm. I like the fact that with this middrive i can still cycle home if in the event that something goes wrong either with the battery or the electrics and that the middrive delivers more torque all leans me towards this kit.
