March 28, 200917 yr Still on the theme of health problems: I wonder if anyone can tell me which is the best folding electric bike. I'd like one that I can fit in my Honda Jazz and which can give me a fair amount of help (i.e. full throttle with minimal pedalling) on hills and when my legs are tired (ME sufferer). Distance/range is less important to me than power as I'm only likely to do shortish trips. Oh and as light as possible! Have looked into folding mobility scooters but they are still too heavy to get into the car. I already have a Giant Lafree Twist which is great, but doesn't fold and can only manage a gentle slope. many thanks for any recommendations. IzzyB
March 28, 200917 yr The most powerfull folder I know is the Ezee Quando but it is fixed gear. The Ezee chopper is not a folder but is small enought to fit in most cars espicially if you fold down the handlebars. It has a 7 speed hub. The next most powerfull folder I know is the Flyer folder with the Panasonic system. Andy
March 28, 200917 yr Have you looked into maybe having an aftermarket kit fitted to a folder you like? Thats what I intend to do as I havent seen a electric folder that looks any good! I tried the Brompton, but I found those tiny wheels just a bit too tiny for my liking (maybe its a getting used to thing), so I'm planning to look at the Dahon next. Here one place that does them but I dont know if you can alter models or motors Electric Bikes Maybe for you, a bike that actually disassembles might be easier (and a lot lighter in pieces) to put in your boot? Good luck John Edited March 28, 200917 yr by JohnInStockie

Andy OnBike - The eBike Specialist Thanks, Andy, I was thinking of the Quando but was rather dismayed to discover from some other posts that the batteries don't last very long (less than a year) and are v expensive to replace. Will look into the Flyer - is that the brand or the model name? IzzyB

IzzyB -------------------------------------------------------------------------- lasting less then a year was a bad batch as i think if you read all the posts from people with other ezzee bikes which run the same battery you will find they do last very muck longer then a year....and if you look at the price of the folding flyer which i just viewed at £2209..although looks a lovely folder i cant think its worth over £1200 MORE then the Quando..and dare say the batteries will cost as much..

I note that the prices of many e-bikes have just jumped a hell of a lot - take a look at the latest price of an up-to-the-minute Wisper Sport (due any time now) - I see it listed at £1500 at Onbike in Kidderminster. That's more than 20% in one hit. I'm glad I bought mine in January when it was bloody freezing. That's a trick I've often used when buying a new motorbike. With the exchange rate and the (hopefully) changing season you'd need quite deep pockets to be buying one now. Rog.
March 29, 200917 yr Have you considered a full sized E Bike and a rear rack? Thule Ride On Tow Ball Bike Carrier although the bikes Flecc posted below look excellent, they are expensive and have no throttle....Have you the capabilities to lift a 20kg bike into a car? my wisper is only a few kg more @ 23kg, and with a rack not much effort involved.............. I went through three of those original batteries very quickly, but the January 2008 battery I have now is going strong with no problems despite some very hard use. The Flyer Faltrad folder which uses a small Panasonic system is made by BikeTech of Switzerland and only handled by Vita Electric in Hampstead London. It's nice and very light little folder, but like most Swiss products it comes at a price. Here's the last two prices I had but they may have increased a bit more since then: Folding Faltrad NS 20kg, Shimano 8 gear Nexus standard, Shimano roller pulse braking (anti-skid) BM-IM70 V-Brake, £2,100 Faltrad KS 19kg, Shimano 9 gear Capreo £2,100 Here's a photo of the 19 kilo derailleur version:
March 30, 200917 yr Hi IzzyB, Have a look at CH White's website Electric Bikes They do electric bike conversions on dahon folding bikes and i think bromptons too.
March 31, 200917 yr Have you considered the Greenedge Silverado - plenty of power, folds and is 19Kg (I doubt if there's anything lighter out there)? It costs £850. I've done 500 miles on it since January and is very reliable. Check it out at the Electric Transport Shop Electric Bike Sales - Shop Online for Electric Bikes, Electric Vehicles and Cycle Accessories - GreenEdge Silverado
March 31, 200917 yr Or the Green Edge Blackstar 2? I can similarly recommend that. Same weight, slightly different configuration; it's a question of personal preference. Also from ETS or direct from Green Edge: Green Edge Bikes - Blackstar 2 Edited March 31, 200917 yr by bode
March 31, 200917 yr ETS can also fit a kit to a folder, although your front fork spacing needs to be 100mm at the wheel. I am considering that for my Dahon, but redundancy looms so may have to wait a season!!!
April 1, 200917 yr Just noticed that eBikes Direct sell the Blackstar cheaper: Green Edge Black Star 2 Folding Electric bike - eBikes Direct

I couldn't be doing with having to put on & dismantle the carrier every time I used the bike. IzzyB

Will look into it - does the Greenedge Silverado provide more or less full throttle for hills? Izzy
