UK police could get Ghostbusters-style backpack devices to halt ebike getaways

Featured Replies

"The device is being developed with the Defence Science and Technology Lab, which is overseen by the Ministry of Defence, alongside other technological innovations that British police are hoping to use. It would fire an electromagnetic pulse at a vehicle that an officer wants to stop because the rider is suspected of involvement in a crime."

"It works by firing an electromagnetic pulse at an e-bike or e-scooter in the line of sight, sending a signal to confuse the electric motor into thinking it's overheating.

The motor, which has an in-built safety system, then shuts down, bringing the vehicle to a halt."

Which coil or magnet is the built in safety system i wonder. Good luck trying to stop my bike to retro fit anything..

Is this just a re-hash of the dutch bluetooth mass shutdown capability to "stop bikes from entering/leaving an accident/crime scene"

So some chap has a cosplay skin for his phone and an app idea.

its a emp cannon you can make a microwave in to one problem is if you hit anything like a sub station like a solar flare or nuke going off no more face book and end of the world ;)

Complete BS. Most motors have no temperature sensor, so they have no way of knowing how hot they are. A burst of EMP might make the controller stutter, but that's about it.

Na its complete bollox. its tv detector vans for the 2020.

you need some bleeding edge materials and tech to pull that off, i can believe that a single person deploy-able single shot anti vehicle emp device may be feasible and even exist in the cia armory. but a multishot device capable of being aimed and effective in the hands of an average plod?? come on.. pull another one..

What a load of sh1te, if you're a miscreant and on an ebike you're gone in a few seconds...by time the cops got a sandwich out their backpack never mind some EMP madness gun the bike would be in the next borough...
