New KT controller and display upgrade wont switch on

Featured Replies

I have a pure free city ebike and I am trying to upgrade the controller, display and add a throttle on the lines that I have read here regarding the Pendalton Somerby upgrade.

I have bought a KT36/48ZWSR 15a controller, a KTLCD5 display and a 1to4 cable to match.

Everything plugs in and I have checked that there is power to the controller but the display does not switch on.

I have unplugged everything except the controller and display and still the display wont switch on.

Any help will be appreciated.

I don't know this unit, but does the display have it's own battery? Is it in place? Some similar devices have a little plastic pull out tab to make sure the battery isn't connected and to stop the unit accidentally getting turned on during shipping.

Update - I have reconnected the original Controller but plugged in the new KT LCD5 display and it switches on, it wont function but it is looking like I have a faulty new controller?
The 1T4 cable may be the problem with the KT controller. Did you buy the cable as part of the kit or seperately?

Whenever the display won't switch on, it's because it has no battery voltage reaching it. The wires are branches 9ff the main battery wires inside the controller, nothing complicated, so the fault should be easy to find and it won't be a problem with the controller because all this works independently.

If you used the wrong cable, you might wipe out some of the electronics.

I bought the components seperately but the julet cable and controller have all the correct pins and colour codes, it is 9 pins controller to IT4 cable.

I have now ordered an 8pin controller and 8 pin IT4 cable.

I will post again when I have tried them.

You have to be careful with those 1T4 cables. They aren’t all wired the same and if you aren’t careful you can blow your controller and display.

If you are going to use one it’s best to buy the complete package from the same supplier to ensure it’s all compatible.

The new controller arrived and turned out to be 9 pins for the IT4 cable also, however it works correctly so the first controller I bought was faulty.

Everything worked except the pedal assist and after a lot of head scatching and downloading the KT LCD5 manual as the manual that comes with it is basic and does not include the advanced settings, I changed the C1 parameter to 07 and that fixed the PAS.

If you upgrade a Pure Free City ebike and keep the existing PAS that setting needs to be changed for PAS to work.

Advantages of the upgrade are a thumb throttle for easy starts, speed control or simulated torque control, 5 power settings instead of 3, top speed up to 20mph.

The new controller, throttle, display meter, IT4 julet cable and a 9 pin motor extension cable came to £97.95.
