I would like a bafang rear hub with a 48v battery. Looks like the best way to get one is to buy motor and controller off Amazon, then buy a battery separately from somewhere like greenlance.
Looking at it I should get a kit for around £500.

Is that how most get a kit?

I bought one from AliExpress, seller titan west (48v 500w) for 26" wheel cassette with c961 display. £252 , delivery from France . They mentioned some duty maybe payable but it got delivered without any further charges. I already have a battery, and I swap between bikes (This one)
Woosh do a 48v UK legal kit including battery, motor nominally rated at 250w , the motor is higher winding, so better hill climbing at the expense of a bit of top speed (but can still easily get to the UK legal assist limit 25km/h). I have bought a kit from Woosh before and the instructions and customer service was excellent
The only thing I noticed with the kit from AliExpress is the assist levels seem to be speed based, rather than power based, which leads to the assist feels like it is coming off and on rather abruptly around the speed for that level. I suspect that will be the same for any generic Bafang kit. It's not too bad and I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't notice it. I may end up changing the controller (and possibly display if I have to) if I don't get used to it .

The 500w hub isn't going to give you more then a 250w hub unless of course you are going to opt for 25a current or more, then you will have to opt for a much better battery that can deliver in excess of 30a continuous.

A 250w hub will easily make 600w, if you know your stuff then a 250w hub can supply 2kw .

With a 500w hub do you really want 1500w of power and 30mph+ for an illegal unregistered motorcycle ?

Woosh do legal 48v 250w kits that can give over 600w of legal power.

Aiui it's basically the same motor the swx02, usually the 36v version is stamped 250w and the 48v version 500w This PXL_20230805_073909781.jpg is the controller that came with my kit

Yeah. 250w on a 48v battery. I'll study the woosh options but I'm tempted to buy it all separate.
How locked are the woosh controllers?. I've fiddled with my yose kit settings and happy we with it, although riding in a headwind while it was lashing down i was struggling and decided I needed a tad more assist (volts)

Volts only give you speed, current gives you power. Power is what is needed for head winds or inclines.

That's not quite true, Neal. You get 30% more torque, 30%more speed and 30% more power when running with a 48v battery compared with a 36v one, when both are running at 15A. Increasing only the current gives a proportional increase in torque and power.

True, I was being very simplistic in my answer.
