...then I think the local bike shop idea is favourite; as long as you've got a trustworthy one (i.e. NOT a Halfords) they will be able to assess the damage and what you need to replace.
It all depends on the degree of damage. It's not not too bad, any decent bike shop will be able to run the CORRECT pedals taps through and rethread the cranks. Of course if the damage is serious this won't be possible.
