Do we have a “Volt” bike representative among us?

i see we have a Woosh and one or two bike shop members and was wondering if we had anyone from Volt....
Or perhaps someone could help me
Brief story, I bought a Bigfoot second hand, barely used and all working great for a month or two, absolutely love it
Now the battery has developed a fault and the computer shuts down and the battery can be heard sparking or arcing internally. Took it to local volt dealer and they said it’s broke, buy a new one at £600
This seems a bit outrageous for a perfect battery in all other ways which has developed a electrical fault. The battery seems to be a sealed unit
So what’s my options? If I send it to get recelled somewhere would they be able to repair the fault?
I bought the bike as it was British made and hoped that would get better customer care if and when required but it seems I was wrong. At the very least I expected volt to be able to get it back to the factory and sort it but wishful thinking
Anyone able to help me not have to spend £600 replacing a perfect battery?
Cheers

Sounds terrifying not perfect does that battery [emoji15]

Volt use bafang ,chinese made electrics. Nothing British about that aspect !

600 is ridiculous price for a battery. Jimmy at insat can sort you out and maybe fix the one you have....but I wouldn't count on it. From your description I'd be scared to even keep it in the house !

You could try giving Jimmy at Insat a call and explain your problem. He does re-cells, but I'm sure he also does repairs. Have you checked the connections on the bottom of the battery, it sounds like you have a bad connection. As long as the battery is not making that sound when off the bike at rest, then it shouldn't be a risk. If it does, then as Kirstin says, get it out of the house

Thanks for the quick reply, how do I contact jimmy? See if he can shed some light on it
I agree it seems a bit ridiculous costing £600 and they seem to consider it a disposable item

No sound when off bike and no problems with it when using another battery so I’m assuming it’s a loose wire or something similar in the battery which is a sealed unit Panasonic b1 if that helps

Just googled insat and no real clues, who is he and what is his company?
Sounds positive both of you recommend him

Even if your battery is beyond repair, I would guess he will be able to re-cell for around £300 or so, depending on the spec.

Thanks, is he a battery specialist? Excuse my ignorance
Is that office number 9-5 I assume
Yeah, he deff. knows about batteries and will prob. want to talk about them for at least 30 mins, so make a brew before you call him.:) He's a top man and offers a 1st class service. Yes, office hours no. I think.

Some bike sellers are just that often they don't have much clue about the workings esp batteries. To open and repair can be time consuming and often not cost effective to them.
Could the arcing be the contacts ?
Have a look at the battery contact and bike docking contacts to see if they are burnt/blackened or pitted.
If so this is the most likely cause and is just as it is a bad contact causing the display to shut down.

If not then the battery will need opening to try and find the cause.

Can you post a battery pic maybe we can guide you to open it for a peek inside. Could be something simple like a bad/loose wire.

I recently hast a battery re-celled by Jimmy and crew.
Nothing could be simpler.
Email them a description of your problem and preferably a photo of your battery.
They will then tell you your possible options repair/recell.
Seeing that your battery is an old one I would go for a full recell.
If you agree, they will send you a courier label to print out.
You then go and buy a suitable posting cardboard box in Tesco etc. and some bubble wrap.
Pack the whole thing up and they send a courier to collect it.
After a few days they will tell you exactly what is wrong and what can be done about it.
My 10 amp hour TONARO battery was recelled as a 20 amp hour for an all-in cost of £420.
They arrange and pay for the courier.
Honestly, a first class service and so easy to use.
