Maybe if you back peddle long enough you will recharge the battery lol

I just checked mine and it does the same, a slow back peddle does not turn it on but as I increase the back peddle speed the system turns on , never noticed until you posted , mine is only a couple weeks old so I would think it is normal.

Another to add to the list, my brand new Carrera Vulcan cut out 3 times on it's second ride , yep at a bad junction part way across . cars had to stop to let me get it moving to the other side , I also noticed the battery manufacture date on the cardboard battery box shows as nearly a 2 year...

Maybe the selector switch on the bars is not switching properly, mine does not give much of a click when pressed, have you been out in the wet weather ? try giving a squirt of switch/electrical contact cleaner into the switch , see if that helps.

Sorry I am to far away to help, but it is pretty easy to do if you can get some one local to help. My opinion is it is well worth doing the mod , it works like a Turbo boost button when used, it is tempting to use it all the time, but be aware too much Turbo use really shortens your bike's...

I have been using mine (Lidl) for the last 3 years first on a non electric then moved it over to my Giant elec bike, i have not had any problems and still on original batteries.
