Use Swarfega on Oil Stained Hi Viz?

I wouldn't take a whole blender full of paraffin, just a cup full. Add washing up liquid to it and mix by hand. Keep adding washing up liquid and mixing until it forms a gel. That's how my dad taught me to make it many years ago. These days though, I tend to wear nitrile gloves when working on...

Help! Disaster, Hub motor failed, discontinued!

You're making progress, keep at it. Probably swap in a new controller and you'll be back in business, or it could be something as simple as poor connection from the battery to the controller, or maybe battery BMS playing up. In my experience, most bike shops are a waste of space. Unless you...

Help! Disaster, Hub motor failed, discontinued!

Could it be the hall sensors playing up once they get warm? If the bearings are knackered, you should feel it from cold just by rotating the wheel backwards and forwards. If you have two similar bikes and one is fine the other is noisy, try swapping the back wheel between the two and see if...

Use Swarfega on Oil Stained Hi Viz?

I usually just scrub some washing up liquid into the oily mark, without adding water. Then wash off. Swarfega is basically washing up liquid mixed with paraffin. Easy enough to make your own. Keep adding washing up liquid to some paraffin, until the mixture starts to gel. Hey Presto, you have...

Not a great start with e-bikes. Chain continually jumps off the front sprocket.

What I'd do is first of all, buy a new chain, as the one you have has now been subjected to all kinds of grief and it could well be damaged. They are not expensive to replace and they don't last long anyway. Then rotate your cranks slowly and see if the front chain ring has been bent. Is it...

    Long commute question

Chefs do have it very tough: hard floors and on your feet virtually all of the time, small movements. For years and years. If you are on your feet a lot on hard floors, it's important to have good cushioning on the soles of your shoes. I used to wear shoes with thin soles, which led to me...

WTF? How can they try to force this dangerous pseudo religious crap on people under threat of sanction? Well done for standing your ground.

    Long commute question

Having suffered plantar for over a year now, i can recommend a night splint, finally i have relief!! i bought this one... I had something like that a while back. I think it's good to make sure you have decent, shock absorbing shoes for walking about generally. Also, do some strengthening...

Different tyre sizes front and rear on road Ebike?

I've run a 28 on the front and a 40 on the back in the past without problems.

MET Police looking out for ilegal e-bikes

Saw this on Twitter today: Not that it takes Scotland Yard's finest to see that there isn't a chain on this bike, or that the motor is marked "1000W"...but I was wondering if anyone heard about a crack down on e-bikes lately?

    Long commute question

So, double blind trial needed of beehive air vs placebo, to prove there is a significant effect at all, followed by putting the bee hive air into a GC-MS to figure out what's in it, then further trials to try and find the active ingredient(s) and whether the beneficial agent operates...

    Long commute question

Hasn't it already been done on that silly "killing Eve" series? Also wasn't the Novichok used in Salisbury in a perfume bottle, leading to that poor innocent woman getting poisoned? I imagine if nut essence can send people into anaphylactic shock, it's possible some perfume components...

Please take me back to school battery electrics

That's interesting. A while back I read that standard 175 mm cranks are too long for most people, often leading to knee problems, but the industry is fixated on 175 mm.

I think a lot comes down to tyre width and inflation level too.

Please take me back to school battery electrics

I can see your point, but in a hub motor, heat has to pass through two air interfaces before it can reach the outer hub surface, whereas crank drive coils can radiate directly to air through the casing. Also, there is good contact to the frame for heat conduction over a larger surface. This guy...

Please take me back to school battery electrics

I've never had a crank drive, but from what I've read, the windings are on the outside rather than caged within the magnets and the wheel hub, as with a hub drive. Is this not the case or are there other reasons why the crank drive can't dissipate heat as easily as a hub?

    Comfort V Weight penalty

I used to think of things like mudguards as just dead weight, but they do play an important role in keeping a lot of crap off of the mechanicals (and your face and backside!). I also like having a kickstand, all too often a bike leant against something will fall over and get damaged. Once my...
