Driver passes too close despite lollipop on passing side

The problem with some drivers is they think the 1.5m clearance is between the driver centre and the cyclist centre, not between the inner edge of the car (tip of the wing mirror) and the outer edge of the cyclist.

why is this even up for debate?

Luckily, plain consideration for others covers 95% (or even 99%) of cases. However, the remaining 5% (or 1%) still leaves an awful lot of room for doubt and danger.

    Alfine 8 Speed Shifter SL-S7000

I cut my right thumb when quite small and cannot oppose it. This makes operating trigger shifters very awkward (but obviously isn't relevant to most people). I found the early versions almost completely impossible, I had to take my hands off the handlebars and reach underneath to change down...

    Newbie... which kit? ;)

For that short commute a small battery would certainly be adequate and much neater. I'm not sure if Woosh could supply the XF07 (for example) with bottle battery instead of downtube. (I'm far from being a style purist, but it does seem a shame to fit a largish downtube battery to a lovely bike...

    SG8R31 Shimano hub

Assuming it just spins in all gears it sounds as if the freewheeling mechanism isn't working right. On most systems that would most likely the pawls are gummed up and can't engage properly. I'm not sure it that applies to that gear; I just read that some of their 8 speed hubs have a silent...

Is there a gearing comparison table for hub Vs mid-drive?

By the time you are going that slowly a hub motor will be at very low efficiency, much of the effort will be yours. The more effort you put in the faster you will go, which will also bring the motor efficiency and power up.

Best kit for mostly off road commute

Exactly. Power output practically impossible to check; though technically I believe it is what is engraved on the motor that counts (even if it's complete fiction ). Assistance beyond 15.5 mph is easier for them to check, but they've got more important things to worry about. Soundwave has...

Best kit for mostly off road commute

Over the nominal 250w limit and it's classified as a moped, so you can theoretically get fines and driving licence points for driving uninsured, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without plates, and I think something else; plus confiscation and destruction of the vehicle.. The risks of...

    Battery charging - cost of

Skip the hours and the charge rate; just guess the overall charging efficiency is 80%. Your battery is as near 400wh (36v * 11Ah) = 0.4khw as makes no difference, so will take 0.4 / 0.8 kwh to charge = 0.5kwh, so 18p at 26p per kwh. This agrees with cyclebuddy above, just a bit less roundabout,.

    250W 36V basic speed numbers

You can see power needed vs speed at https://www.gribble.org/cycling/power_v_speed.html With it's default parameters that give 540w needed for 30mph. Of course, that's motor output power, not battery power. A typical motor is around 80% efficient at optimum revs, so that would be 480w output...

Think Highway Code changes are good? Read on - - -

Maybe more important to mark the many vehicles without auto drive capability where the driver isn't paying attention or observing other road users?

    Hello and guidance needed

I second that comment, we had a bike converted and it was a huge improvement. I'd taken our 25 year old (non-electric) Giant in for service at the local Bike Hub after doing it myself in the meantime. They happened to have some old but servicable V-brakes hanging around so just did it .

    faulty battery?

I think it unlikely the motor will have been damaged. The battery may well have been. You are probably quite lucky not to have had a major fire. If the battery and charger came together and they are still under warranty the supplier should replace both.

    MXUS xf07 270rmp general discussion & info

Front hubs sound noisier because of their position in front of the rider. Noise can come from square wave controller.

    MXUS xf07 270rmp general discussion & info

Thanks, yes. I think the easiest solution would be the same motor in a 16" front wheel, but that might have other disadvantages like the front pedals hitting the road? (It would also help me mount the crossbar, which is becoming more of an issue as age advances.)

Using the ebike battery in a power cut

No chance if the battery has handshaking with the controller (eg Bosch or many other up-market brands). Otherwise should be possible via an invertor (eg 36v dc => 240v ac, around 100w to 200w, looks like a bit over £100). For lights a standard rechargeable lamp will be cheaper and easier. A...

    E-bike under 2k - Cycle2Work

Worth looking at Woosh. They do some Cycle2Work schemes, but maybe not all. There seems to be a big difference between different schemes (and the cut they take). https://wooshbikes.co.uk/, for example the Gran Camino https://wooshbikes.co.uk/?gran-camino

    MXUS xf07 270rmp general discussion & info

Our wheel size is 700c so quite big. I'm not sure of the winding on our XF07, or whether they can come with different winding speeds. https://ebikes.ca/tools/simulator.html?motor=MXUS_XF07&cont=cust_17_35_0.03_V&axis=mph&wheel=700c is only a simulated model, but indicates it reaches peak...

    E-bike under 2k - Cycle2Work

We need a little more info really to help. How fit are you? How much assistance do you expect from the bike? How far do you intend to ride each ride, and how regularly? What sort of riding (road, good cycle paths, tracks, real off-road, how hilly)? Do you want to do your own maintenance?
