    Wind noise

A lot of manufacturers say their helmets should not be worn with anything underneath. Make of that what you will, but cheapo ear plugs are the risk-free option.

    Bosch battery re-celling

Hopefully Insat can do it, but the Bosch batteries are difficult to work with. A reasonably competent battery builder had a look at one of mine and declared in un-recellable. I have an 8.8ah Classic battery - in good order as far as I know - which you could have a for a modest consideration...

    Gearing and motor

Two cogs at the front does give more gear options, so probably better suited to a road bike. No concerns of the Bosch motor overheating. I thrashed mine by dragging some roadies up Saddleworth Moor - long climb, steep in places. No detectable heat in the motor casing when I got to the top.

New Yamaha powered e-bikes at £1399

Good spot, Stu. As Steve says, entry level. That's probably more than adequate for most users who won't go much more off-road than a bumpy cycle path.

    Batteries too expensive!!

It's the same Classic line compatible battery I linked to earlier. There was also some smaller capacity Classic compatible batteries from China a couple of years ago. I suspect the batch was sold and no more were made...

    Gearing and motor

On my Bosch bikes the motor does cut in and out on the flat in lowest eco setting - that may be what the OP is experiencing. She needs to try tour or sport. A larger front ring is worth fitting, although I would expect the bike to get to 15mph with the present gearing and not a ridiculously...

Done the search to death, need advice please.

The Secret is a nice little bike for the money, but it's no more than a generic Chinese ebike with 'Kudos' stickered on it. If you root around the net, you will probably be able to find the same bike for less money. Which, in turn, makes converting your bikes a less viable financial option.

    Batteries too expensive!!

Kalkhoff, Panasonic and Xion batteries are similar - or more - money than Bosch, albeit some are bigger capacity. http://www.50cycles.com/electric-bikes/e-bike-spares-and-accessories/batteries-and-chargers.html

    Batteries too expensive!!

Bosch batteries are interchangeable. Many of us have spares and/or a second Bosch bike. I have accumulated four Bosch Classic batteries over the years, including the pattern one in the link, and all work with both my bikes. I am not aware of anyone who makes a current shape pattern battery...

    Batteries too expensive!!

That was certainly the word that got about for the Classic, although I don't know if it was ever officially confirmed. Maybe that applies to the Gen 2. Either way, I reckon the riding experience is similar, although I've not done many miles on a Gen 2 bike.

    Batteries too expensive!!

Anyone new to ebiking can easily over estimate the pace of change, which experience tells me is relatively glacial. Take Bosch as an example, is the latest crank motor very different from the original 2010 one? I would say not - without looking, it would be hard to tell which you were riding...

    Batteries too expensive!!

I hope your are right - battery capacity/longevity and price are the biggest weaknesses of ebikes from my point of view. But I fear things will happen more slowly and not in the way you think. The new cells look promising, and being based on existing technology have more of a chance of seeing...

News: Momentum Electric launch VIT-S on Kickstarter

The idea of a 'fast' roadster has some merit. It's the type of bike that may appeal to existing road cyclists who are thinking of an ebike. But as other posters have said, the execution is lacking. I doubt the motor is any more powerful than any other legal crank drive - there's no magic...

46yr old tubby guy trying to get back to the great outdoors

The OP wants to spend about £2K on a trekking bike, so I'm not sure he will be very interested in kits or Oxygen MTBs. Having said that, the Oxygen trekking bike is worth a look as a cheaper alternative. Haibikes are expensive for what they are. My suggestion would be something from Cube...

Evora 6.6 lithium Ion 36v battery

Are you saying the battery is 6.6ah? Some of the in-frame batteries on the generic Chinese folders are a bit bigger. If it is 6,6ah, 20-odd miles seems about right in average conditions. Might only be half that with a lot of climbing.

    Batteries too expensive!!

There seems to be an expectation - fuelled by what's happened with some tech gadgets - that all electrical items will halve in price every few years. Similarly, the technology is meant to improve in leaps and bounds in the same timescale. Those of us who have studied the market can see this...

Hub verses External gears for mid drive

Plenty of factory ebikes use the Nexus hub, so it should work fine. Budget hub gears can't take lots of torque so I would only use one with a legal 250w crank drive. Chain line can be hard to sort with some crank drives kits - it's sometimes not possible to use all the gears on a cassette. In...

    too much torque

As Stu says, the cassette probably has the smallest possible ring already which is usually 11, although I think there are a couple of 10s at the higher end of cassette pricing. Time for you to do some teeth counting.

    Bafang Max Drive

David from AMPS was on the case swiftly as usual. All I wish to say at this stage is the matter is progressing, and fair play to David for being attentive to a prospective customer.
