Geoff I've got a Cube hardtail. Get yourself a Suntour NCX suspension seat post from ultra cheap and efficient bikediscountde for around £40. It will soften out the bumps no end ...without the weight, complexities and cost of full sus.

Another vote for Marathon Plus with slime in the tubes. Three thousand miles over varying terrain. One nail puncture in all that time.
