Electric Mountain Bikes: No one will buy one?!..

This thread is a puff for the OP's eMTB club. The diversion was in post three. To quote Fawlty: "You started it."

When Eddie said there weren't many naked hybrid ebikes, KTM were the only ones I could immediately bring to mind. Price not too sore for UK supplied Shimano/Bosch bikes. Shame about the sus fork on the two in Col's link. I thought there was a rigid fork one in the 2016 catalogue. This Ghost...

Twenty inch frame, 700c wheels, and a level cross bar means it will be a bike for Eric, not Ernie.

    BBS02 replacement crank arms

Have you greased the thread? Worth doing, not to prevent seizing although it will, but because the grease enables the fixing to be done up tighter.

Plenty of talk on here recently about eMTBs. But I reckon there are also plenty of people who want a 'fast' hybrid for road and well made paths. The Karoo could be just such a device, particularly if the controller could be... No, no, I won't go there.

    Right... I'm going tubeless

Soft compound as well, almost certainly, so the tyre won't last five minutes if used on the road or a hard path. It's designed for those who take the bike to the trail on the back of a car, or those who live next to suitable terrain. We are lucky to live in a land of plenty in which we have...

    BBS02 replacement crank arms

I think the pedals are about the only fixing on a bike which does need to be done up very tight. The Park Tools pedal spanner used in my local bike shop is long. When they put pedals on, they give it a fair bit of grunt. As d8 says, a not very tight pedal can 'worry' in the thread, ultimately...

    Right... I'm going tubeless

I can see the attraction for proper mountain bikers who want to run lightweight tyres at low pressure. My local bike shop got a £3K+ Cube tubeless ready mountain bike as a special order for a customer. I was there when they did the tubeless installation. What surprised me was how light - and...

Electric Mountain Bikes: No one will buy one?!..

Always difficult to be sure of knowing the full circumstances. But more recently, I've read of some cases where the insured has been treated better than many people would think he deserved, after lying to the insurance company on the proposal. Equally, some people have found themselves on the...

Hopper Urban SE Electric Bike (Viking Harrier) from Tesco

I know two people who have Coyote Connects - same bike as the OP observed. Both have had niggly faults, but once fettled, both have given good service. The one guy sold his to buy a (push) mountain bike, but the other one is still in regular use. Having said that, the owner of the other one...

Same applies to insurance claims, as it might because a warranty is a type of insurance. We are in the complicated - but regulated - world of claims 'redrawing'. An insurance company can only redraw - reduce - the claim if they can show the modification/circumstance they were not told about...

    Choosing between these folding bikes?

Folders at this price point tend to be heavy and unwieldy - folded or unfolded. They are all much of a muchness, so if you try one it will give you a good idea about them all. I'm concerned you want to touch the ground and have knee twinges. If you can put your feet flat on the floor while...

Electric Mountain Bikes: No one will buy one?!..

Col, I have plenty of insurance. What I am trying to get across to you is I don't assume any claim I make under any policy will be paid. That applies to all my insurance policies. If my house burns down, it really ought to be covered by my buildings and contents policies. But until the...

Electric Mountain Bikes: No one will buy one?!..

Col, The reason I mentioned personal responsibility was because I was assuming any insurance would not be valid if I were riding a dongled bike. In other words, the cost of any claim would have to be paid by me. I look at all insurance the same way. If any of my bikes are stolen, I like to...

That's how I use my dongle. As you say, easier access to over 15mph is safer in traffic. I do have some sympathy with the legal e-mountain bikers. There is already hostility from push mountain bikers, so (largely ill-informed) talk of dongles will only raise the temperature.

Electric Mountain Bikes: No one will buy one?!..

Col, In this thread you have spoken of 'huge liability' and, if I recall, a possible claim that could 'wipe you out as a business'. Some others on here have posted along similar lines. So it is a question of degree of risk. Has anyone examined a trail centre's public liability insurance...

Electric Mountain Bikes: No one will buy one?!..

Good to see altruism is alive and well in the cut throat world of cycle retailing. The warranty on a dongled bike is a fuss about nothing. The dongle doesn't make the generally reliable Bosch system any more likely to break. It's quite likely Martin has never had a related claim, and is...

Keep an eye on cable length when you fit it. One of the right hand cables in the pic doesn't appear to have much slack.
