Donor bikes - what to look for?

Somewhere between the two is a geared hub motor. It's single speed, but has a gearbox enabling the motor to run at its most efficient, while generating plenty of torque. The Bafang BPM/CST models are good examples. The 500w CST will assist up to about 23mph and climb like a mountain goat. DD's...

Donor bikes - what to look for?

When you say 1000w I am assuming you mean a direct drive hub? These are low torque, so ally frame should be fine. Are you sure DD will suit your requirements?

Donor bikes - what to look for?

Oh, and don't EVER, no matter how tempting, or new, or cheap or shiny, ever, touch an Apollo. Ditto Trax & Shockwave. Stick with a half decent brand and you won't go far wrong. It normally won't cost you any more either. Add Dawes to the 'half decent' list. Also most Claud Butler's.

Donor bikes - what to look for?

You don't need a steel frame (below 1kw anyway), any frame with a rear hub motor will be fine. If you want front wheel drive, go for rigid fork (normally steel) or fit torque arms to suspension fork. Disks are best, but mech disks area pain in R's. Unless you are very heavy, or want top...

    On the Fiddle.

Another guitar player here. Heart says vintage Fender (electric), or Martin (Acoustic). Head says that Yamaha and Takamine actually make far more practical instruments. Generally speaking they are easier to play, more robust, very stable, cheaper, easily replaced and comparable on sound. I'd...

hi names dave from coventry england

I seem to recall seeing this before on a powabyke, but I assumed it was a bodge. It will be important that the 6v Batts are each the same ah rating as the 12v ones. Assuming it's a 36v bike, you would need to wire all four batteries in series (pos to neg all through). Pics will help us to give...

    24vsla vs lipo4

Roughly speaking, when comparing SLA's with lithium, you should halve the SLA capacity. Your 14ah SLA's are about equivalent to 7.5 ah of lithium. If you put 10ah if lithium in, it'll go further AND faster AND pull better.

Bike suitable for child seat and able to tackle a hill?

We started off with a rear seat. If you look closely, most consist of a plastic bucket seat supported by a 'U' shaped steel support, and connected to the bike by a quick release mechanism. The open end of the 'U' connects to the quick release thing, which itself is clamped to the seat tube of...

    charger shows green,but i have done 12miles?

On most chargers, the green light comes on when no current is flowing into the battery. It could be a blown fuse, or a poor connection to the battery. If not obvious you will need to get a meter on it.

    adjusting gears

I would guess that your existing 8 speed is cassette, and that your new hub motor is freewheel, so as others have said you will need to purchase an 8 speed freewheel.

    Hydraulic Brakes

It's a small bore pipe, filled with a viscous liquid. It won't loose much, if any. That said, I kept my hoses vertical whenever possible.

    Hydraulic Brakes

Chain Reaction sell a barb and olive kit for £2.50. You need one kit for each hose you want to shorten. Mine came with a little yellow jig to clamp hose in a vice. I could live without if I had to, or make one in a pinch by drilling a 5mm (a guess) hole in a block of wood, the cutting in half...

    Hydraulic Brakes

So, Chain Reaction were good good as their word, free delivery and the Shimano m355 brakes turned up within a couple days. Thanks guys. Installation was not hard, I shortened both hoses to fit with the supplied spare olive and barb and did not have to bleed as I was careful to remove pads and...

    adjusting gears

You need to get the 8 speed on there, or your indexing will be all over the place. The rear mech simply moves from one limit to the other, but your shifters control by how much for each change. In other words, your shifters are matched to an 8 speed cassette/freewheel. If there is a bulge in...

Bike suitable for child seat and able to tackle a hill?

You need to consider the bike layout carefully when it comes to kid seats. I've been there and done this. Most cheap rear mounted kid seats actually attach to the seat tube. So if you want a bike with seat tube batt you can rule these out. The other (less common) rear seat is either attached...
