Could someone explain how to measure one's head for an off the shelf helmet please. I've heard ill fitting helmets are just as bad as wearing no helmet. Or is it worth going to an LBS to get measured up?

Yeah, the Sport from Kudos or the Cyclamatic from Sports HQ would be a more sensible buy. Both companies have proven track records for providing decent warranty cover and aftersales service. Essential when spending a wad of cash on a new bike ;)
