Hub gear servicing - Alfine 11

Looks like I'm getting the same kit, although my friendly bike mechanic is going to do it and he already has Shimano hub oil. As Alex says, it's pennies to the point of irrelevance over the life of the bike. The first oil change is worth doing, although I expect many owners don't bother. I'm...

    KTM Macina Cross going cheap.

Not sure of the age of your bike, but I believe the latest Nexus 8 hubs are called 'alfine'. Maybe they have similar guts to mine and use oil.

This thread's title has been changed, presumably by the mods. Whoever did it has a fairly loose interpretation of the meaning of 'resolved'.

    KTM Macina Cross going cheap.

Does your hub need an oil change after 1,000km? My Alfine 11 does. I appreciate that's more maintenance than repair, but your hard use might have released some little swarfy bits and will certainly have given the oil a pasting. I've read stuff about Alfine 11s changing more smoothly after an...

    kalkhoff bs10 my first week.

For the bike to be such a mess it must have left the factory in a ropey state, which the dealer did naff-all to sort out. Neither Kalkhoff nor 50 Cycles have come out of this at all well.

    KTM Macina Cross going cheap.

Stu is an enthusiastic user of the bike and appears to be getting through some brake pads. I wonder if a rim brake is less than ideal in this application, there's only so many pads you can fit before the rim is too worn meaning a new wheel. A disc brake would be much better from a pad wear...

    Best cycle pump.

If you are going for a hand pump a flexible coupling is a good idea. I have a £20 Lezyne, but any make with a bit of quality about it would do the job. Some hand pumps can struggle to put 100psi into a roadie tyre, hence CO2, but 50-odd psi into an ebike tyre is less of a pneumatic challenge.

Pedelecs - Read Terms and Conditions of Warranty

If you decide to take court action, the other side cannot require you to do anything. How you prepare your case is entirely up to you. No costs are awarded in the small claims court so you have little to lose, other than the initial fees. If I read your post correctly, you are being bullied...

A rigid seatpost will almost certainly enable you to set the saddle a couple of inches lower. On some bikes, it is also possible to mount the saddle a little lower on the post, but you need to make sure everything is tight afterwards so there's no chance of the post piercing the saddle. If...

I've decided hub rather than cd

KMC chains are well-regarded so I doubt you could do better than one of theirs designed for a hub gear. Thanks for doing the research, I will be looking for one of those when the Rose chain expires. I doubt that will be for a while - I haven't got the fitness to ride the bike hard enough.

The motor assists so if you had the option of lower gears you could get up steeper hills, or the same hill with less effort. On that bike you would turn up the controller - low, medium, high - to high to get maximum assistance. But it will still be like an ordinary bike, you will have to pedal...

It is, but changing the hub gear will still require the same technique. Having said that, the Alfine hub on my Rose/Bosch changes a bit better with the motor switched off. But I still reckon those hubs don't like changing under any load - human or electric.

I suppose what Den means is the bike doesn't have a separate throttle. I thought that might bother me on the Rose/Bosch, but it doesn't. Quite the reverse, my Brommie Nano is throttle only and having to keep that open is a bit of a pest on longer rides.

I think this section could become your domain, Frank. The title is clear enough, so hopefully no one will come in here to bleat about 'illegal' bikes.

Whatever Shimano say, their hub gears do not change well under load in my experience. I stop pedalling and pedal back a fraction to change on the move. It soon becomes second nature.

I agree the battery should stand up to the proposed use. Thirty kilos is a lot to hump in and out of a cellar, but presumably the battery comes out which will lighten the load. Bike looks like single speed to me, which limits it a bit. However, Annie is nice and light at eight stone which I...

What's happening with the Brompton ebike?

When I had my Brommie converted by Nano I was told Brompton were quite good at ringing to ask Nano about technical stuff, but a lot less good at helping Nano in the other direction. For example, Brompton refused to supply bikes to Nano at dealer discount. Seems to me Brompton have a bit to...
