    first electric bike

Giant, and I think now Raleigh, have entry level ebikes at £999. Both makes sell through shops, so you may be able to find a stockist locally. The Giant sounds made for you, being more 'road hybrid' spec. I looked at a Giant - in a shop - a month or two ago and it is better quality than the...

BBC News site gets it right for once. Shock! Horror!

A point often forgotten by moaning drivers is that most cyclists do pay 'road tax' because they also own a car.

Another Brompton owner planning to convert

I have a Nano and it's performed well - nearly silent and a fair amount of poke. But the weight of the motor and controller all but kills the portability of the folded bike. Then there's the Brommie bag and battery to carry. It's OK for lifting in and out of the car, but I don't think it will...

    gazelle or kalkoff?

The build quality of Gazelle bikes is outstanding, but as Flecc says some lack poke. I tested a Gazelle a year or so ago and the lack of power was noticeable. The bike was too dear for what it was and Gazelle wanted hundreds more for a larger battery. I believe the XT - which the OP is...

    North East Bosch Servicing/Suppliers

It's called Sports Recycler Sports Recycler - Home Page There is an ebike department run by a guy called Vince. He's very helpful but I think his expertise is more in electrics and hub motors, rather than crank drives.

    I need a screw...

...update... The bigger news of today is my thumb control is once again firmly fixed to the bike. I lashed out on a little pack of 4X10mm machine screws and one of them did the job. The control had been loose for a while, so the moral of the story is regularly check the fixings on your bike...

    I need a screw...

Mike, Kind offer - thanks. Measuring the depth of the hole is not easy, even with the end of a vernier, because of the shape of the moulding. I agree it will be a standard length, and the 10mm posted earlier looks a good bet. Might try one of those if I can get a little pack for a pound or two.

    24s HT3525 Kraken Build

The OP, very fairly, gives a max range of 30 miles. On a bike that eats distance, that isn't very far. Or put another way, you might only be able to go out to play on it for a couple of hours. Nowhere near enough time for me. Of course, other riders may think differently.

    24s HT3525 Kraken Build

I wonder if the relatively small battery is holding it back. A powerful off-road ebike appeals to me in my dreams, but I'd want 20ah, rather like the bike Alex of this parish has.

    I need a screw...

Thanks. The local DIY shed might be able to manage one, I mean a pack, of those.

    I need a screw...

Thanks. It fits into a plastic moulding, so I'm not certain if that type of head will fit although it probably will. How the head sits will impact on the length, which in itself will not be simple to measure. Unfortunately, there's not 'one on the other side' to have a look at. I can't...

    I need a screw...

...but only a little one. The screw holding the ebike thumb control on my Bosch equipped bike fell out some time yesterday. I say screw, might have been an Allen bolt. Looks like its a 4mm thread. Length is important because the captive thread is blind and not very deep - a...

    Chose a cheap Ebike

Saddles are a personal thing, but a Charge Spoon might not work too well with a hybrid/ebike. Charge Spoons are aimed at roadies or mountain bikers who take much of their body weight on their hands and feet. Also, most roadies use padded shorts which tells you something about the general...

Anyone had an interesting ride recently ?

I did the 28-mile circuit of Kielder Water at the weekend. Cracking ride, lots to look at and a well-maintained path. Best of all there's only three gates which means mile after mile of uninterrupted riding. More and steeper climbs than I was expecting - I was down to two bars on the...

Recommendations for a hilly commute in Sheffield please

I agree with the last two posts, although I can't match ghoul's 100-mile battery range. Like d8, I've replaced a lot of short car journeys with the bike. Worth bearing in mind your car will only do about eight mpg from cold, although this will rise fairly swiftly. Even by using the bike for a...

    Inner Tubes

Some makers offer light and heavier weight tubes. The heavier ones ought to be more durable, and on an ebike there's no need to worry about the extra few grammes.

    KTM Macina Cross 400W

Better for the battery if you don't run it flat regularly, so best to recharge after two return trips unless there's another very good reason not to.

    Cheap Chinese vs Cheapish Conversion?

The bike has a front cantilever brake - if I read the spec right. It will be actuated by a standard lever, so no worries about fitting a cut-out.
