    Lightweight motors

There's a fundamental problem with all on one motors, which is heat. The controller is surrounded by hot copper coils, so it can't lose its heat as easily as a separate one can. Every single version of all in one motors, no matter whether big or small seems to have had reliability issues. On...

    Yosepower hub kits.

You get a 33% increase in speed, torque and power when you go up from 36v to 48v. The downside is a slight loss of efficiency at low speed, so in some circumstances you can get some overheating, like when really struggling up a steep hill, though the extra power helps keep your speed up, which...

Help! Need advice on how to repair

There's a line on the connector that shows how far in you must push it. They're quite tight, so people often stop short of the line thinking it's enough, but it isn't. Before I can say anything more than that you'd need to do some tests. Unfortunately to do any testing, you need access to the...

The motor works as a generator as soon as it starts to turn. At zero rpm, the whole battery voltage is available to push current through the motor, but the current is pegged st 15a by the controller. Without the controller, the current would be massive, and it would burn out the motor. When the...

    Car - Roof rack storage?

I wouldn't advise putting a cover on a bike on a car rack. The wind resistance would probably rip it of. Before my tow-ball rack, I tried one of those clip/strap-on racks on the back of my car for a 200 mile journey. I normally got 55 mpg, but with the bare bike on the rack, I couldn't get over...

All parts are standard catalogue parts. If you need anything, tell us, or better still show us, what you need and we will show you where to get it from. You don't have to use exactly the same parts as replacements. There are many alternatives too. You can change the whole bottom bracket and...

The off-road switch is only illegal if it releases the 15.5mph speed limit. As I already pointed out, there is no limit on power used. If you had a switch that switched from a 250w motor to a 500w one or brought in an additional motor, it would be illegal too.

    Cyclamatic Power cutting out

You can use any throttle you want because they all work the same. You can buy one that looks identical to the Cyclamatic one, but it will have different wiring. IIRC, the switch on the Cyclamatic's throttle is wired internally to switch off the 5v to both the throttle and the pedal sensor...

That's about it when you're buying an OEM bike. When you build your own, you have more control over the NM.

Battery Chemistry Choice for Occaisonal Ebiker

I guess so. I've had a couple for about 8 years that I use for testing motors and controllers. I have left them untouched for two years at a time. I can't remember ever charging them except for when I first got them, when I did a capacity test. They still work fine now. It's great that they're...

The first 250 crank motors were advertised as around 40NM torque with a max speed of 15.5 mph. Today, there are 250w crank-motors that are advertised as 110NM with a top speed of 15.5 mph. Power =torque x speed. Hello! It's the same with hub-motors. Basically, torque is proportional to...

It depends what you mean by legal. They're not legal as a pedelec bicycle, but are legal as a registered L1eA vehicle. The rule is absolutely clear for a licence-free pedelec: The motor can be rated at no more than 250w, so you can't use a 750w or 1000w one and cut down the power, i.e. the...

    Is my maths correct?

You should so some research on BMSs for solar. I'd be pretty sure that they're substantially different to ebike ones. The problem is the balancing. 100mA bleed currents are OK for a 4P cell-pack, but, even for an ebike battery, you're going to need something substantial for 38P. An ebike BMS...

Battery Chemistry Choice for Occaisonal Ebiker

Normal Li-ion ebike batteries are so cheap and light now, I can't see a case for anything else. LiFePO4 is double the weight of Li-ion, but lasts four times as long. If long life is your prime requirement, that could still be a good choice, but nothing spoils a bicycle more than weight. You...

    Gtech battery problems

Correct. A guy from Bafang explained the origin of the name years ago, but I can't remember why it was 8Fun. I think there's something lost in the meaning of the translation, like when Honda had a label on the tank of all their motorbikes, "Preserve nature, always wear a safety helmet"...

    Is my maths correct?

How are you going to balance it? The BMS alone will probably cost £800. Assuming 12S for 48v, 500/12 =41.67, so you can build a 12S41P battery. 41 x 2.85 = 116.85 Ah or 5047 watt-hours. If your charging system can cope with 13S, you get 13S38P for 5068 watt-hours because you're using 494...
