    Legal 50 mph electric bicycle

Yes, but you can't pedal it. How much do you reckon that you've spent on your bike altogether if you add up everything? I looked at that Lightning Strike bike before, but the sums just don't add up. It has a 75kW motor and the middle of the range version has a 15kWh battery. That means a...

    Help! Batteries.

You need the glue gun to fix the sense wires in place so that they won't chafe in use. Chafed sense wires = instant fire! You could use Kapton tape or even gaffa tape, or other methods, but then you need to add them to the list of additional costs or tools.

    Newbie query

If you can turn the wheel when it's disconnected, but you can't when it is, that means that you have a short between the phase wires somewhere along the line from the motor connector to the controller. Have a look to see if the bullet connectors at the controller are touching. If that's not it...

Downtube battery on a step-through frame - is it safe?

The Hailong battery mount has the problem that the fixings are at the top end, so they never line up with normal bottle fixings; however, it's very convenient for your frame with the high bottle fixings, but it means that you'll get a lot of leverage when you kick the battery, which will rip out...

Is the extra 5 amps chewing up my range?

Here you can see the effect of current on capacity. The closest lines on that graph to what you did are the 1.5C and 2.0C, which show a 20% difference in capacity. More releastic would be 2.0c and 2.25C, which you could interpolate to 10% difference. That only affects the capacity for the time...

Which Donor Bike to start with?

IMHO, hub motors are way better than crank motors for commuting and general travelling. A crank-drive has some advantages in some situations, like very steep long hills or serious off-road use. I can generalise by saying that hub-motors are more reliable, quieter, cheaper and more user-friendly...

    BBSHD crank axle movement

Doesn't seem likely because the motor and nylon gear spin very fast compared with the crank. When it's damaged you loose drive completely.

Downtube battery on a step-through frame - is it safe?

I think it would help if you show us the actual frame. The higher you mount the battery, the worse the bike's handling, especially when you aren't on it. The lower the battery, the more likely you are to kick it.

Is the extra 5 amps chewing up my range?

Firstly, at 25 amps, you're draining the battery 25% more quickly, but you're not going 25% faster. Secondly, the capacity of your battery varies with the amount of current you take from it, so it'll have less effective capacity at a higher current.

    Battery

I would suggest that you stop trying to dig yourself out of the holes you keep falling into. Most of what you write is very misleading and confusing for these guys that are trying to sort out their simple problems that in most cases have simple solutions.

    Help! Batteries.

You need a spot-welder, large soldering iron, small soldering iron, solder, multi-meter, cells, nickel strips, insulating washers, insulation sheet, hot glue gun and glue sticks, 13g silicone wire for the power leads, thinner wire for the charge socket, heat-shrink sleeve in various sizes, hot...

    Battery

You obviously don't know that bike. They're very heavy without the batteries, the motor takes high current and the bike isn't worth very much. A lithium conversion is an option, but it would be very hard to justify. Rather than spend £300 on a lithium conversion, I think I'd rather put the money...

    The Cycle Show

I didn't see them there this year. i tried it first two years ago, and it didn't work very well. The pedal sensor was intermittent. I tried again last year, and it it was much better, though they're bespoke control system seemed to have a mind of its own. I think it was working properly, but the...

Which Donor Bike to start with?

Both those kits are good. The first one is Yose Power that I mentioned, but it's the freewheel version. That normally means 7 speeds max, so you have to do something with your shifter. If you any more speeds than that on the donor bike. The Bafang kit will be plug and play. I'm not so familiar...
