    I wonder why..

I am at the stage where despite ergonomic grips my hands still start to go numb and my forearms pump up at around the 40 km mark. Yes I am using fatter tyres with correct pressure... I will try suspension on my new build.

    Cheap Brompton Conversion Kit?

Do you ever have any problems with your threads bing cut and not rolled? The strength issue has been putting me off threading my own spokes.

    I wonder why..

Kits with a clock on the LCD instead of total time, motor AND ambient temperature, total Wh used instead of current Watts used. Battery voltage on the main screen instead of stupid bars that mean nothing, a single trip reset button. Plugs for brakes and throttle in the LCD and single thin cable...

    Recommend a kit/components

If you have good quality bikes for riding why would you want to put 6+ kg in your wheel "just for fun"? A geared 250 W kit will be just as good on hills as a 500 W direct drive (maybe better?). And it will be easy to ride un-powered as Nealh says above. A geared 250 W rear hub motor with a 48...

    Buying a ebike part 2

Here is a typical discharge graph which illustrates what you are seeing: The bars on any LCD are just an indication and should be taken with a very large grain of salt. The only way to know how much a battery will give you is to run it flat, preferably on one of your regular routes. Then you...

Test ride on a kalkhoff agattu 8 speed

I'm only 60 but having my bike as a means of transport rather than leasre which means stop-start shopping riding etc. I am building a "ladies" frame bike. It isn't a step through because step through frames weigh at least a half a kilo more than "ladies" frames because they need to be reinforced...

Mid crank drive motor - what type of gears are best?

Apparently there was a family clash in the Dahon family and one of the offspring set up Tern which make really nice folders. I kind of fantasised about putting a mid drive on one, very nice looking bike with good components. My choice is a GSM with an external controller, preferably in the...

The law isn't the only problem your insurance company is the other. If you get in a you responsible accident it will be best if you don't have any money or belongings their law company can pounce upon... These were the only questions my insurance company asked me: "is the motor 250 W...

    Nominal Power misunderstood?

Philosophy is fun. But out in the cold hard world norms have been fixed and ours is EN15194. If your bike or kit has that printed on it so be it! It is a legal pedelec. Can't climb hills? Sucker you bought a lemon. Climbs hills with ease? Well done! Enjoy your ride. EN 15194 is 250 W nominative...

    Nominal Power misunderstood?

No it is very clear: the manufacturer must guarantee that the motor can provide a constant 250 W under certain operating conditions laid out in the norm EN15194. That norm is the basis for laws defining pedelecs in many European (and non-European) countries. The 250 W are nominal as defined by...
