    Shimano casette with ball bearings!

Thanks both. My freewheel must have been screwed on in the factory and has no means of being screwed off - no teeth for a freewheel tool... I have a freewheel tool in my tool kit. Thanks again

    Shimano casette with ball bearings!

In the course of converting my bike I took the cassette off to see what type of rear wheel to order. No problem, ready to take on the swap of old cassette to new wheel when I order it. My girlfriend's bike has a broken spoke so while on a roll I decided to take the casette off to see what kind...

charging electric bike via battery bank

OK so that is more clear - a broken UPS and some new larger batteries then... You are still jumping through hoops, a second battery that you charge during the day, despite the extra cost, is a much better idea IMO. Even charging through the mains - £160 will buy you about 1,600 charges i.e. way...

charging electric bike via battery bank

You are going to need a very big UPS. Cheaper and easier to have a second 48v 11.4ah battery that you charge directly during the day. A small UPS, cheaper than a second battery, will only run for a couple of hours.

    Bikes vs Cars

Grumpy old men on electric bikes now there is an idea for a TV show! Oh wait... already been done... But presented by J Clarckson there's a new twist :p I went for my annual work health checkup and was lucky, only two cars overtook me before immediately turning right making me reach for the...

    Air powered

My bike will be nuclear reactor powered! :D Couple of huge solar farms just up the road too. Wind is having problems taking off because of "ecologists" protecting birds. We all know that birds are stupid and love flying around huge moving blades...

    Cow

I am a farmer's son, I have so many cow stories it is boring. Including the death of a neighbours child who was killed by a bull which probably mistook him for a dog (he was 3 or 4 at the time). I have also seen a dog go into orbit (low earth orbit), it never went into a field with cows in it...

How (not) to encourage children to cycle

I lived in London for about 8-9 months in the mid '70s. I have been back a couple of times and... well it isn't the same country I lived in. (n.b. my opinion on CCTV cameras). Chin up though, you haven't gone as far downhill as the States :p

Nihola cargo trike, Bafang or Sunstar?

It gives you 350W (the difference between the two motors is the controller amperage). It will use the battery quicker. As d8veh says, you need to stop the motor before changing gears (downshifting) and the easiest way is to install the supplied brake lever and just touch the rear brake before...

Bike Cameras. The Negatives and Positives of using them

You sir are the king of understatement! You become that very same street warden as soon as you wear a camera. By wearing a camera you become part of the camera problem not the cure

22 miles commute... which setup is best?

I thought very seriously about buying this one (I may still do so), I have had a ride on one and it felt great. Add a Magura hydraulic brake on the front, marathon plus tyres and a sprung seat post you are still under 400€. The triangle is big enough for a bottle battery or a triangular bag. I...

Nihola cargo trike, Bafang or Sunstar?

I read about a guy who added a "clutch" lever - a brake lever that was not connected to the brakes just to turn the motor off when changing gear. Was it someone on here? He said it looked weird - two brake levers on the left hand side - but it worked well for him. I thought that a push button...

Nihola cargo trike, Bafang or Sunstar?

I think that the OP has a point that you are all overlooking: you can change gear while stopped with an internal hub gear change (without mentioning his other half's preference for hub gears...). This can be very usefull in stop and go riding such as in a city like Copenhagen. Copenhagen, from...

Nihola cargo trike, Bafang or Sunstar?

The advantage of the Sunstar is the torque sensor instead of PAS. As you can buy a torque sensor for use with a hub motor doe $240 they are really overpriced IMHO.
