    Brexit, for once some facts.

You're right Tillson. The costs and troubles that N.I bring to the UK are all out of proportion to their size. They are under 2.8% of the UK population and the DUP 1st preference vote at the last election was under 0.5% of the UK electorate, yet from Ian Paisley to Arlene Foster they've...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

But the DUP don't want a hard border. They seem to have the perverse attitude of wanting a flexible border while not allowing that to be achieved. And their actions are at odds with their own population who voted to retain membership of the EU, or at least want an open border to the EU's...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

No not miffed Tommie, I just have a different view on the issue. Mine is get tough with the DUP, not the EU on this issue. As I observed earlier, it's only the DUP that is out of kilter with what is necessary, even with themselves. The EU are being accommodating, prepared to accept a...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

She won't have to try to hard, they'll give in. The right in her party knows that bringing her down will risk Labour seizing power in a premature election. The DUP know that if she falls, they can lose their moment of glory and the bulk of the promised billion. All May has to do is agree the...

New Legal Speed Limit: What should it be?

Yes, exercising is the best way to ease any arthritic pain. But the joint is still wearing further. The big problem with single speed is if slogging at low cadences on climbs. That always comes at a cost in later life, it's the most common problem that cyclists suffer from. Not a big problem...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Kate Hoey is a well known rebel who often steps outside of party lines and regularly comments on N.I. issues rather than doing her job of being the MP for her Vauxhall constituency. She's a featherweight who has no influence where it matters. .

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Arlene Foster is wrong in saying she will not accept any regulatory divergence. Such divergence already exists and is accepted by the DUP: N.I. subjects have the right to be R.o.I. citizens. N.I. subjects have the right to be EU citizens. Other UK citizens without Irish relationships have no...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Dream on, the DUP were always going to be the losers in this issue: The R.o.I. is in the EU. N.I. voted to stay in the EU. The UK don't want a hard border between them. The R.o.I. don't want a hard border. N.I. doesn't want a hard border. The DUP don't want a hard border. But the DUP...

A random thread for things too unimportant for their own thread...

Unfortunately the worst hill is between my large newer population area and the rail lines at Croydon. We do have trams and they climb amazing gradients, though even they had to have a lot of grading to make them possible. Also many stretches of London's train tracks don't have any spare land...

It's 14 miles, but there's two very nasty hills in the route and of course London's very heavy traffic which in the outer areas is very fast too. No cycle paths on much of it and where there are it's usually just painted lines which motor traffic ignores, sometimes having to. A few brave souls...

Yes there's many areas like that in the UK, we are very much a car based culture and much more aligned with the USA than Europe in this respect and many others. As you've shown there's no travel time advantage for them, so presumably it's the privacy and comfort of their own tin box, rather...

We've said that from the outset. First choice stay in the EU, if that can't happen, stay in the single market. .

Apparently not, the regulatory alignment* is for the N.I. border alone. Other UK border points will be hard on present indications, there being no customs union planned for the UK in general. * Regulatory alignment is newspeak meaning agreeing to EU rules. .

Ah yes, public transport. Superficially most would count me well served with public transport. To go from London's fringe into the centre I need to use a bus from a stop a few yards from my home. That takes me to a bus-tram interchange and the tram whisks me to the entrance of our local main...

N.I. to have different rules to the rest of the UK, following another Theresa May concession. The Irish border will be subject to “regulatory alignment”, a new wording to make acceptance of some EU rules in N.I. sound more acceptable. Can't see the DUP being thrilled. .

    Fascism returns to Spain

I knew it would take a long time since the Belgians are strong on human rights. I hear the fleeing Catalonian leaders have finally appeared in court on the Spanish extradition request. Apparently it will be some days before there's a ruling. Still, this is Belgium, maybe Tintin will come to...
