Came off bike in most plonkerish way

I'd say the snaking and braking instability were due to the buildup of detritus near to the kerb. In effect you were on a loose surface dirt track at that point, making for uncertain steering and limited braking adhesion. Could happen to anyone in that road area close to the kerb, so best to...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Probably more my instinct to go for the simplest and quickest solution to any problem! .

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Take our cue from the Italians and put a length of rope and a lamp post to good use? .

New battery technology. If or When?

Yes, she turned a request for an opinion on battery futures into an advertorial on Bosch. Obviously missed her true vocation as a politician. .

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Theresa May's long awaited speech shows her previous tough talk was just that. I see it as the first step to a soft Brexit and major disappointment for the core Brexiters who want complete separation from the EU. . .

    Brexit, for once some facts.

You've just revealed what's wrong, they're large countries but sparsely populated. Given that's the secret of being a decent country, we need to do some extensive culling. .

    Government subsidize

London is slowly improving, we now have an East-West segregated cycle route and there's talk of a North-South one. They are not very extensive though, only linking inner areas of the city. Otherwise it's just painted line cyclepaths and cycle superhighways, the difference between them that the...

    Government subsidize

Nothing at all. There's subsidies from £2500 to £4500 on the purchase of hybrid and e-cars, but no help on e-bikes. There are some assisted purchase schemes for any sort of bicycle, buying through an employer, but nothing for the individual. .

Rides illegal machine - kills pedestrian & blames her........

Well, other people maybe. Just post war when I could ride a motorbike 25 miles through the New Forest from Bournemouth to Southampton seeing almost nothing else on the roads, it was perfectly safe. Goes to show that it's other people who are the trouble. ;) .

Rides illegal machine - kills pedestrian & blames her........

The two extracts I've quoted show what is wrong. Those despatch riders don't do what they do safely, they put their priority over everyone else's safety. They often have minor contacts with people and vehicles and they routinely scare people with the suddeness of their arrival and actions...

Rides illegal machine - kills pedestrian & blames her........

This will make you jealous then. On the left behind the railings there's a thick hedge with a two lane tram track hidden behind it, then the pedestrian and cyclepath you see with a wide shrub and grass separator to the road. The road is a four lane urban dual carriageway with a green central...

Rides illegal machine - kills pedestrian & blames her........

We've covered this before, a fixie is not recognised as having a brake in law, the law defing a fixie with the required one front brake as the one case of a bicycle with one brake being legal. .

Rides illegal machine - kills pedestrian & blames her........

Not so, the penalty for riding without a front brake is a fine. The penalty for wanton and furious riding endangering life is up to two years imprisonment. He was sentenced for the latter. .

Pine martens. An unusual use for e MTB?

Indeed. On one occasion on a local lane I had a pair of muntjak deer trotting alongside me completely unconcerned as a I cycled along. If I'd been on foot they would have been seen for dust. That was on a normal bike, my slight hub motor whine does upset some wildlike. Riding past a few...

Rides illegal machine - kills pedestrian & blames her........

He was wilful in choosing to ride too close pedestrian at speed. The only safe speed close to a pedestrian is near to walking pace. That's why he faced the wanton and reckless charge, not a charge of the bike being inadequately equipped to comply with the law. .

    Update on N.I. e-bike regs.

Maybe the DfT will stretch a point, they've done it for us in April 2013 in issuing an instruction to police forces not to prosecute for something which was clearly against the law. In addition their instruction also breached EU law, so they can get a bit naughty when placed under enough...

Rides illegal machine - kills pedestrian & blames her........

Living and cycling here in London for many years I can assure you that many of the London couriers are ridiculously dangerous, often showing utter contempt for pedestrians. The system they work under is in part to blame, paid by the job and very little at that, they need to ride at breakneck...

Cycled around the world in 79 days!

Great achievement by Mark Beaumont, he has cycled around the world in under 79 days, matching his aim to beat 80 days (and not a battery in sight). How he could stand 240 miles a day with 16 hours in the saddle beggars belief, I've never exceeded 80 miles and more usually 60 miles maximum. .

    Update on N.I. e-bike regs.

In law you are undoubtedly right since they've always been illegal, but I suppose the dealers are just as much victims of this situation. Any who have sold a number of e-bikes could be bankrupted by a legal class action. .

Rides illegal machine - kills pedestrian & blames her........

I agree, not just for cyclists but for drivers as well where it's appropriate. To me, sentencing on the basis of chance outcome is always wrong. But sentencing policy being what it is, as I posted much earlier in the thread, a custodial outcome was inevitable. I'd anticipated one year, but it...
