    29er are the fastest bike

I grew up with 26" as the norm in Britain, simply because wheel size also has much to do with body height. The British were overall much smaller back then in the 1940s and '50s, while the famously tall Dutch preferred larger diameter wheels. And when mountain bikes were first created at the...

    Spring Drive bike experiment

Yes, good one. :) I don't usually get caught by these but this time I was since there's been a number of spring drive bikes I knew of in the past, some of them really eccentric. Yours was unintentionally leaning towards practical! .

    29er are the fastest bike

On a glass smooth surface there will be no measurable difference in efficiency for 26" to 29ers. Once any unevenness is present in a surface, a larger diameter wheel becomes more efficient, but on reasonable road surfaces the difference is too small to be concerned about, especially on e-bikes...

    New Tesla Model 3

Not now, that quote from Carwow was what I achieved last December, and they've been quoting it ever since! :D. It was for the base model Visia and was only from two northern dealers. It hasn't been valid since. Those in my southern area were considerably higher. Currently there was a deal...

    New Tesla Model 3

I haven't precise details on the model 3, but looking at their claims it's likely they've cut back a little on the number of cells, hence a somewhat lower range claim than for the earlier two models. The US price is $35,000 and dollar prices usually seem to translate direct to pounds for UK...

    Spring Drive bike experiment

It would be interesting to know the true efficiency. There have been many designs for spring driving bikes previously of course, there's one such design on this link. .

    New Tesla Model 3

The ranges on these are correct Kenny, the 200 miles easy to achieve and even 300 miles with care. There's a big difference in the battery technology between the Tesla models and such as the Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe which have ranges often well below 100 miles. Those last two use li-ion...

    Sunrunner 24v bike repair

That's the bike I meant ok, but not the same motor. It was a Tongxin Nano in the one I saw reviewed, arranged to be quite low powered due to that tiny battery. They must have fitted another motor at some time and I've no idea what that one is. P.S. Just did some searching and it seems these...

    Sunrunner 24v bike repair

Before I even see the photo I'm guessing it's a Sun e-bike, originally marketed as Sun rather than Sunrunner. They used the Tongxin Nano motor in this model with the handlebar mounted battery box and left fork mounted controller. This is the motor with roller drive instead of internal gears...

    Kappstein 3 speed motor

In the Panasonic units prior to 2010 only to set a permitted power level above a cadence of 40. Within whatever the permitted level is, the torque sensor determined the pulsed power. Since mid 2010 there's effectively no cadence limiting in these units for most e-bike riders. .

News: Glasgow to Cape Town e-bike expedition raises awareness of electric mobility

A great enterprise, but it also shows how widely pedelec law can be flouted. They've ridden using S class speed pedelecs, illegal unregistered motor vehicles in the UK, France and Italy which they've ridden through. .

    Kappstein 3 speed motor

I think Shemozzle may be referring to the way a torque sensor sends variable strength pulses for the motor drive. The Panasonic units were designed in this bionic fashion for the motor to mimic the rider input. When their shunt is altered to greatly increase the power, the power pulsing...

    Eastern Power?

I think you'll find efficiency is about 75% for hub motors from reputable makers like Suzhou Bafang and Ezee Kinetics. Apart from past statements to that effect, I've reverse calculated about that from actual hill climb ability of a couple of bikes using motor only on precisely graded hill...

Accident with a pedestrian on my ebike

Yes it does say that Tommie, as I said if the e-bike is legal. A legal e-bike in the UK is by law an EAPC as I quoted, and that stands for Electric Assist Pedal Cycle. Note, the electric is assistance, as required to qualify for that insurance cover. .

I own a Nissan Leaf ev, and considering an electric bike

Thanks for the warning Bob, good point. In this example it's my local official Nissan dealer I've bought from back in 2008, part of a long established chain, so less likely to be involved in anything dubious. With any luck it will be one they sold in the first instance. However, I doubt it...
