    Accelerator and new law question

As I posted earlier in this thread, our EU law was quite obviously derived from the Japanese law, and that is explained via a link in this post. That Japanese law on power levels and control seems ridiculously strict until one knows their cycling circumstances. In many town and city locations...

Raleigh Motus or Kalkhoff Agattu 7G?

The carrier on these Agattu bikes is definitely not good enough for 25 kilos and alone is not safe for child carrying. That's because there's only one small bolt taking the weight each side and they are only prevented from rotation around the wheel by being anchored to the mudguard. There's no...

    Bosch motor failure

Agreed, my post was just to indicate that KTM's statement about taking it to the dealer first also matched the consumer protection law. .

1-1-2016 Today's Change in the Law.

I know the document you mean, it was Guidance issued in December 2015 and in section 1, subsection 1.2 they state there's an exemption for start up assistance. Unfortunately they've issued several guideline documents and information sheets in the last few months and that is the only one stating...

1-1-2016 Today's Change in the Law.

As another kiwi says, it's a walk assist throttle, not for start assistance. The law allows it to be used when walking alongside up a hill too steep for riding up for example, but not when riding. .

    Accelerator and new law question

It's historic Darren. The origins seem to have been the pedelec law in Japan which had a proportional power provision meaning the control of power had to be through the pedals. When the EU needed a law for pedelecs they seem to have followed the Japanese example, exactly the same 250 watts and...

    Bosch motor failure

Also this is in compliance with consumer law: Legally, you have a contract according to the Sale and Supply of Goods Act, and that contract is with the retailer, the person who you paid your money to, and not the manufacturer. Any rights that you have against the manufacturer, such as a...

    Accelerator and new law question

It seems to be due to an administrative delay Darren. The new provision for having a throttle for those needing one is by type approval to meet EU law requirements. However there is currently no type approval class for pedelecs with throttles and the existing L1e-A (Low Powered Moped) class...

New to Ebikes and Conversation Kits... Help?

That's a fairly standard kit at a very good price, and it will do your job, giving you enough assistance on hills so long as you are prepared to contribute your share of effort. It is possible to get a more powerful kit suited to hill climbing but at a rather higher price as you'll see on this...

Switzerland too, they've kept in step with various EU laws simply to co-exist more easily with their neighbours. .

    Met a fellow electric biker

Maintenance needs are sometimes considered part of reliability Jay, so that might have been in part what he meant. Crank drive units can greatly increase the wear and stress on the bike's transmission, leading to many more changes of chains and sprockets than if only the rider power went...

    Accelerator and new law question

Even if true, we'd still be bound by this law, Norway being an example, never a member but having exactly the same EU EPAC law. The reason is simple. To be able to carry out trade with the EU as an EFTA member we'd need to comply a with a large range of their laws and some are fundamental to...

Motor noise on a new hub motor

The torque is at it's maximum from a standstill so it's best not to pull away on power alone, since it puts a lot of strain on the internal gears which are nylon or similar. The high noise then is an indication of that stress. In addition the consumption then is at it's highest so it saps the...

Getting the best from a lithium polymer battery

That's completely wrong for lithium batteries as d8veh has said, it belongs to types with older chemistries. The only exception is the one I mentioned previously, doing it once initially to set the zero point for meters on some specific batteries, or at much later occasions when and if the...

    Helmets @ Aldi

Nice thought, but it was actually our reward from the EU for voting to remain members in the 1975 referendum. If we do the same this year, we'll get an absolutely brilliant 2017 summer. Now a question: Do I get a reward for the most original reason for voting to stay in? :) .

    Bosch motor failure

Yes, Panasonic introduced the 2 year warranty on crank motor units and batteries 15 years ago at a time when all other e-bike warranties were a year at most and most batteries had no warranty at all. Eventually the others had no option but to follow suit. .

Minivelo bikes don't seem to have taken off here in the way they have in the USA and Japan, but hopefully some of our members will know of some possibilities. .

    E-bike commute

I'm not surprised Cooper, the examiners have been getting quite tough and each have their pet objectives when testing. Many years ago the favourite fail reason was "insufficient use of mirrors", that being the cause or one of the causes on almost every fail. These days they are more creative...
