Lawnmowers and golf buggies need insurance, rules EU

i doubt it Erik. The issue is not at all clear and the Times may be wrong on this anyway. I understand that it's a ruling by the European Court of Justice that has said this, not an EU directive at present and there is no current law requiring any of these to be insured. The EU's type...

Last yesterday's Commons DEbate on e-bike regulations

It's not at all clear this will happen Hoppy. The cost per model of type approval is high and will have to be added to the purchase prices. A supplier will need to be sure of selling plenty of each model for it to happen at an acceptable cost. A separate class of bicycle may not be necessary...

    Cycle Insurance from Bikesure

The subject has been done to death many times Phill. It's all results from a mess created in 2003 when a new type approval law appeared to legalise 250 watts, while the e-bike law remained unchanged. The DfT failed to act to clear things up for years, but this is finally happening now that...

    Cycle Insurance from Bikesure

Correct Michael, but probably only a month to go before he can. The new law has passed the committee stage of parliament so only needs to be approved by the full parliament now with all parties agreed on it. .

    Cycle Insurance from Bikesure

See my post above Phill, you cannot be prosecuted by the police for your 250 watt bike. However there is no immunity from civil action so an insurance company has to abide by the old law until the new one comes into force, which is about to happen. .

    Cycle Insurance from Bikesure

See my post above Jordan. New regulations are imminent which change the position. Meanwhile a DfT waiver exists which prevents the police acting against anyone with a 250 watt machine, which virtually all pedelecs and e-bikes are. They are also effectively pedelecs and not motor cycles and...

    Cycle Insurance from Bikesure

They are right until the new law is announced as passed by parliament, probably by April 1st this year. They will be unaware of the DfT waiver for 250 watts so are quoting the EAPC regulations, since at present that is all they can rely on in a court. The Bosch and indeed nearly all e-bikes...

Trek battery with built in tail light

Looking at your 12 miles to showing empty, plus an extra 5 to completely empty Noel, you will probably squeeze another year out of that battery in local use, especially on level 2. So your plan to just use it to the end is best in the circumstances. .

Last yesterday's Commons DEbate on e-bike regulations

If you mean on existing e-bikes, yes, the new regulation is not going to be retrospective. Any new e-bikes bought after the new regulation is passed into law by Parliament will have to be type approved to have a full throttle. .

Trek battery with built in tail light

I wouldn't worry about the battery reading empty quite early Noel, ageing can produce more voltage drop which shows as reading low. Your 12 miles is very low for level 2, though your total load weight is large. In a normal bike that BionX battery when new typically gives about 18 miles on...

UK to Harmonise Electric Bike Law with Europe?

I think there will be an instruction or guidance for the Vehicle Inspectorate in due course, though it might need a demand to trigger that. .

Indeed James, I just added that bit to an answer I gave earlier, it's on this link They need type approval to be permitted though. Thanks for posting the committee report. .

UK to Harmonise Electric Bike Law with Europe?

P.S. to the above, added 15.55, 25th February: The new EAPC regulations have passed through the committee stage in parliament, and minister Claire Perry included the following statement in her report: There is one more point to respond to. The twist and go classifications will be permitted up...

Trek battery with built in tail light

I know, the stupidity of their battery prices has crippled BionX sales. On most models they've been offering much smaller capacity batteries to make them seem less expensive, but Noel's heavy cargo bike needs that largest option. If his battery is due for replacement, it's worth him checking...

Trek battery with built in tail light

If your problem is the loss of range, as Michael says, it won't be lights causing your problem. If the battery is two years old it may well be starting to lose some of it's 9.6 Ah capacity since it's total of 355 Wh is not very much for a long wheelbase heavy transport e-bike with a BionX...

Chinese AKKU Bosch Battery first test

That range is certainly good, the differences you've observed may be no more than cell make difference characteristics than any inferiority. The Akku performance maintained to the end might indicate lower internal resistance in the cells, sometimes a characteristic of somewhat lower capacity...

    Cycle Insurance from Bikesure

That's delightfully vague, as ever with the Daily Mail's anti-EU stance. Note the words "may have to" in their article. These following exemptions are what the law has to say about such vehicles being motor vehicles, liable to have insurance: Article 2.2. (a) vehicles with a maximum design...

S class bikes spreading more widely

Yes, I completely knew all that first half of your post Tony, both current and new EU law on those classes. And as I said, the S class will be somewhere in between. Germany has obviously legislated appropriately long ago, also introducing a further refinement in 2013, and now The Netherlands...
