This sound promising for cheaper e-biking

Complete fantasy, the 50 times increase in e-car batteries etc by 2020 is ridiculous, as is their forecast of batteries soon being more cost effective to buy and use than mains supplies. Only yesterday I was listening to some motor industry figures stating that petrol and diesel cars have a...

Help to test Panasonic pedelec motor

It sounds like the motor has died. You can get plenty of information from my Panasonic support site, including the correct battery connections to use, shown on the Lithium Polymer battery page. Use the new type unit pages, but some of the information on the old type motor can be relevant as...

    Scooter / Moped style. Legal?

Yes, they were old car style "wet" batteries then! Here's the 1897 Humber e-tandem prototype: .

    Scooter / Moped style. Legal?

It's possible with one set of pedals though. I think it was VeloVision that published a clever compact tandem design built by two women which they rode together routinely. The front rider was upright, the rear rider lower and semi-recumbent, both using the same large two angle pedals on one...

    Scooter / Moped style. Legal?

The first commercially available e-bike electric motor was a hub motor made by Heinzmann in 1922. Dutch electrical giant Philips had a prototype one a year or two earlier. .

    Scooter / Moped style. Legal?

Given that these are small scale sellers and mostly marketed online, it may be that spares like new motors won't be available. Things like batteries and controllers are usually available though. They are generally quite reliable, huge numbers of them are routinely used in China for daily...

I'm assured so, but since that BS costs lots of wonga I'm not about to check! :) .

Bad experience with Kalkhoff Agattu XXL

I understand that, but they will work on quite a few bikes with forward opening slots, the bolts used against the curved rear section of the frame dropout. On most frames the bolts sit against symmetrical upper and lower curves so happily stay in place. It just means the adjustment of the two...

    Scooter / Moped style. Legal?

Those frequently quoted cases are not in any way relevant to the type of scooter style e-bike in question though. They have been widely accepted as legal and to the best of my knowledge have never been at trial on the question of their legality. Also the current law link quoted does not take...

Bad experience with Kalkhoff Agattu XXL

Understood, but the devices I posted on are like motorcycles ones and I think so much simpler than having a dirt collecting jockey wheel. As well as keeping the wheel in place, they are also a great aid to adjusting a chain to the correct tension. .

    Scooter / Moped style. Legal?

As long as it's classified as being 250 watts it's likely to be legal. One of our members, Synthman, rides one of these and tells us he has no trouble with the police bothering him about it's legality. The key thing as far as the authorities are concerned is that it must be possible to pedal...

    The UK Difference

Definitely a tunnel would be cheaper and less environmentally damaging than a large deep cutting and I did consider it, but not for long. The problem once again on the fringe of a huge urban conurbation is crime. Tunnels, like underpasses, are magnets for those who like to ambush others to...

    Upgrade current bike

Yes, soldering the shunt will increase the current (amps) as d8veh has advised. He feels 18 amps is realistic. That won't fundamentally increase the speed more, just increase the power to maintain your higher speeds. The shunt change won't make the battery more capable, but it will enable...

    The UK Difference

Bicycle theft is a major problem in The Netherlands where cycling is far more popular than anywhere else in the World. To show how severe the problem is there, one thing the Dutch often do to lessen the chance of a new bike being taken is to deliberately rubbish it at purchase. That can...

Advice needed on conversion suitable for hauling heavy loads in trailer

I understand that Australia has now adopted what amounts to EU standards for e-bikes, bringing the former maximum rating up from 200 watts to 250 watts. The EN15194 test for compliance includes two permissible methods of measuring the power, and one of those gives considerable flexibility. On...

Yes, I'm sure that is the reason with the NuVinci and suspected as much simply since there are no fixed change points to work from. It needed checking though, just in case they had been cunning enough to have the system recognise a sudden change in torque applied due to a ratio change being...

Have Your Cake and Eat it.

This isn't really a big deal though is it? For the non-wealthy their cars have about £140 per annum average VED, so less than £12 a month. The average distribution of sales dates therefore means an average loss of £6, and less for the poorest with the lower end cars. That's a tiny amount...

    Alan Henning

I agree, my thoughts are entirely for those he has left behind who continue to suffer what has happened. All our lives are transient and could end at any moment, and those who make high risk choices increase the possibility. Alan knew that and was happy to take that high risk in the name of...
