Bad experience with Kalkhoff Agattu XXL

Since the NuVinci equipped model does not have any gear change easement facility, maybe the stronger 8 speed option with that Impulse 2 benefit would be more reliable, but there is an element of risk still, given your strength, weight and the Impulse power. Perhaps opting for that and getting...

    The UK Difference

Yes, they are an alternative for short hills, but I think with our huge catchment area population a cutting would be a better option, That's particularly since the hill on the northern flank is so long, a mile or so too long for a viable escalator. .

    The UK Difference

The only comments I can make are to the past conditions that made us one. Some of them made others cycling nations as well, but not all can be repeated of course. 1) Novelty. The introduction of the safety bicycle led to it being quickly adopted by the upper middle classes for leisure, and...

    The UK Difference

Best estimates on the recent UK sales indicate roughly 1 per 2000 of the population. In The Netherlands it's roughly 1 per 67 of the population, so we've hardly much to celebrate yet. .

Bad experience with Kalkhoff Agattu XXL

The OP has posted this: "Given that I have to tell the dealer which bike I want - the new Agattu XXL Impulse 8R HS or the Impulse Ergo XXL - quite soon, I'd really appreciate any feedback." so my answer was based accordingly. .

What's the best maintenance free bike?

Nice bike, but someone has removed the front mudguard for some odd reason. Fitting a BBS02 might mean losing the chainguard and you might have to check the bottom bracket is suitable for that motor unit. The combination of your riding power and the motor unit can stress Nexus hub gears so...

Bad experience with Kalkhoff Agattu XXL

Shimano know that their hub gear torque limits can be exceeded by the combination of rider and crank motor power and advise the makers accordingly. In your case, the combination of your weight, the hills, and the fact that you are a strong rider has meant some trouble was virtually certain with...

They can't do that under EU rules unfortunately. Member States may only continue to charge zero rates in place on 1 January 1991. No Member State can introduce a new zero rate or reintroduce a zero rate once it has been abolished. The most they can do is reduce the rate to 5%, but that only...

E-Biking, Doing It The Greek Way!

Nice report on a wonderful area Dave, they can keep the "green" boat and the "supertanker", I prefer yours, big enough to be a practical ocean-goer but small enough to be adaptable to most circumstances. Those Secret e-bike models are ideally compact for on-boat cruising. .

Thanks John, I missed that one, good to know there is a quality one available. .

What's the best maintenance free bike?

It's debatable whether a crank drive can be more efficient than a hub motor, I doubt there's much in it if both are optimally designed. However, a crank drive can be more owner friendly, since punctures, tube and tyre changes, spoke repairs etc are so much easier on unpowered wheels. Those...

    The UK Difference

In Northern Europe e-bike sales continue to boom, countries like The Netherlands and Germany measuring annual sales in hundreds of thousands. Their car markets in many cases are in the doldrums, consumers widely electing to keep their present cars long term. It's just been reported that the UK...

more details on the Shimano STEPS system

That query would probably get the typically Japanese response, "Our systems do not fail". :D Seriously, with Shimano's cycling experience I guess they've thought of that and made it low gear. .

more details on the Shimano STEPS system

Yes, it is their second STEPS system. The level of gear change integration now is impressive, even including automatic change down when stopped, and it's a very neat installation indeed. I really hope it's successful and see no reason why it shouldn't be, given the moderate prices. .

Of course, that's why I said they aren't the strongest, but I was answering the questioner's brief and they are the only virtually maintenance free bicycle brake. .

What's the best maintenance free bike?

Back to the original question: What's the best maintenance free bike? It would include these where possible: Roller brakes front and rear, not the strongest but almost never need any attention and there's no adjustment to do. Rolloff hub gear. Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. Standard...

    Wanted THORN RESISTANT INNER TUBE

A quarter of that can buy a satisfactory tube, the price I put on punctures is paid for in the Marathon Plus tyres I buy. Nonetheless, I hope the tubes work well for you, I've no doubt their quality will be high and hopefully the air retention good enough to mean less topping up. .

Wow! At that price they ought to come out and repair any puncture you get! :) .
