    Dynamo...

Internally geared hub motors have been around for over a decade and are by far the most common. To check, turn the motorised wheel forward and then try turning it backwards. If it's much easier forward than backwards, it's geared with an internal freewheel. .

    Dynamo...

I agree James, I'm all for individuality and we've long been famed for our eccentricities. Same is easy, but same is boring too. .

Or by the e-bike's motor generating power, which makes me think James wants a complex solution in preference to the simple and obvious. Maybe a bottle dynamo generating power for a miniature motor to drive a tiny compressor pumping the tanks of two Tilley lamps would be ideal. .

That was my instant thought on reading the first comment! They buck ok, but they won't really wheelie. :( .

hello from a flykly owner in London

I'm not sure from the photo whether the connector has five or six radial pins. If it's six plus a centre pin, check if it's this DIN connector at Farnell. You can check the data sheet link next to the illustration for the dimensions to see if it's a match. .

    Dynamo...

Just one more point of bottle dynamo disapproval James! I suspect you've never heard them in action, but you won't enjoy the quiet of no motor when a bottle dynamo is in action, they can create quite a din, especially at the interface of the tyre wall and dynamo wheel. My last one was very...

How many people are using there e-bike off-road?

Fully agree Eddie. I'm pleased to learn that there is that much tolerance in Ashdown forest. I've never had a cyclist stop for me there, but that's because I step to the side and smile when one approaches, leaving them in no doubt that they are welcome to ride straight past. We do enforce the...

    Brake Disc Sizes

As d8veh says, you can use the front brake through a bend, using what grip is available. If you do get the front wheel sliding away (a "lowside"), the important thing is to let go of the lowside handlebar and sit on the bike or motorbike as it goes down. That way you stay on board and don't...

How many people are using there e-bike off-road?

I agree Eddie. All bicycles are also banned in my local reserve, as are horse riders, while the vehicles of the Forestry Commission and sub-contractors cause huge mudbath damage. However, we have an organisation of which I'm a member and we do most of the policing and despite the regs we are...

Electric Bike for Long Distance Cycle Touring

It's surprising how quite small variations in the rider input can have dramatic effects on range. When at 71 years old I reviewed the original Kalkhoff Agattu with it's 260 Wh battery, I was able to get 30 to 35 miles range consistently. Some subsequent often much younger buyers found it...

. Of course it's possible to go a bit too far in having a strong front brake! (The Matra MS1 prototype based on the Tidal Force e-bike system) .

    Brake Disc Sizes

Yes. The front is capable of taking a far greater braking force than the rear, simply because the weight shifts to the front under braking. That's why the front dips down under braking. The forced down front tyre grips better than the rear which lifts under braking. That's why the front brake...

    What watts?

Yes, I agree on the availability, indeed the BionX started as a 350 watts, only later producing 250 and 500 variants. But the 350 watt options seem to have been much more popular in the S class market than the 500 watt ones. I can only guess at the individual reasons, but they were probably...

Electric Bike for Long Distance Cycle Touring

The only member I remember doing any longer distance tours on an e-bike in Europe was frank9755. He hasn't posted in here for a long time so a message might not be seen. However, here's some links mentioning his trips, although with little information, they do at least confirm some...

    What watts?

I'm looking at this a little differently Rob. All the e-bike powers you mention are inadequate for transporting you in any circumstances without your assistance. On that basis you might indeed prefer the most powerful to cover almost all eventualities since you don't always have to use that...

Electric Bike for Long Distance Cycle Touring

Definitely not a myth Jonathan, the reason is well understood. Within the range of fairly normal personal weights, the body naturally develops the muscular strength to match the body weight being carried for normal functions, muscles and weight keeping pace. This matching only begins to break...

    What watts?

The German e-bike industry carries a lesson on power choices. On their S class e-bikes they are permitted up to 500 watt ratings, but the majority of manufacturers have settled on 350 watts. I'm not saying 350 watts is right for you, just that the optimum is often a better overall choice than...
