does it recharge while you pedal?

Indeed, working models of ships have apparently demonstrated the same, using vertical column wind turbines to travel against headwinds.

Are we ever going to get our Stevens (Bosch) bikes?

I'm guessing that means delay in delivery of the Bosch units. It's long been common knowledge that Bosch have struggled to match the success of their units with enough production to meet demand. Stevens haven't been the only e-bike maker embarrassed by this.

does it recharge while you pedal?

Yes. When I pedal as well it goes further than when I don't pedal, so it must be recharging.

Giant aren't the cheapest, but their build quality is generally high, possibly why they were chosen for this purpose.

Replacing / recelling battery for Giant Lafree Twist

That's bad news. For the reasons I gave previously I don't know anyone who I can recommend for this NiMh recelling service. Even the specialist recellyourbattery.com company rule out doing it for e-bike batteries. You can get a new battery through German ebay on this link, and they are the...

Bosch challenge for the more technical among us

It doesn't appear to be. This problem has existed on the Panasonic units optional walk-alongside throttle for more than a decade. If it were that simple, Panasonic or BikeTec* would have changed it by now. Software has it's limitations. *BikeTec of Switzerland first invented this mod for the...

Bosch challenge for the more technical among us

It's exactly the same on the Panasonic crank units which first had this feature, no guts in walk alongside mode. It seems to be because the mode simply bypasses the pedal rotate function to run the motor. So with no torque applied through the pedals the power is at the minimum. These systems...

    Battery Advances radio program

The subject of the last "In Business" program from BBC Radio 4 was what industry is doing to meet the need for much better batteries. Included are a number of ideas both in development and at the suggestion stage, some of potential interest for e-bikes and much of interest for smart phones...

Four years on and very little to report!

Brilliant Tom, e-biking as it should be, trouble free enjoyment.

What would you do with this donor bike?

Dopey e-bike thief asks owner for charger

Tredegar posted it the other day Andrew, on this link No problem of course, no ready way of knowing. :)

    What bike was stolen?

I'm sure that's true. Some years ago a university group did an in-depth study of actual British crime and found that it was as just about as high as it could possibly be. They concluded that even if we did away with all police forces, it would rise no further. The police function is not...

    Redbridge 2014,May 18,afternoon

Seems to be the way e-bike events go. Either they start very big, then year by year decline into closure in the way Presteigne did, or they appear once and promptly disappear in the way Wisper's attempts to mount multi-brand events did. Less partial sponsors are needed such as an e-bike...

    velo electrique

Link to the site. I don't know them personally, but they look alright and I don't see why a satisfactory cargo e-bike should cost more. One can buy a sound basic e-bike for around £600 so it shouldn't be more than the £900 difference to add a wheel etc and cargo box. You could ring or mail A...

    Deaf Aids

I don't need them but have some knowledge of the subject. At one time the NHS ones were analogue while private ones were far superior digital models. The NHS now supplies digital as well, but not with as great a choice as the private sector. This website explains the NHS versus Private...

    let's pretend...

I don't know how the Tonaros are supplied in your Australian location, but here in the UK as standard they are PAS. If the optional throttle is added then a 20% hill is just possible at very low speed as you say. But a hill restart from a standstill without any pedalling as Helen specified?

    let's pretend...

This from the original post: Those are unlikely to be possible on any mainstream legal e-bike, no matter what hub or crank motor.

Too many options in my mind, but... any good?

It might appear that it would pass, but in practice the power test is only a small part of the EN15194 certification by a test laboratory. In practice I'm sure a test facility would see the possibilities and test in all modes.

Too many options in my mind, but... any good?

Of the two test choices which may be used to certify 250 watts for an e-bike's conformity to EN15194, one uses a timed acceleration. If a controller is modified or exchanged to improve acceleration, it could mean the certification of legality is lost if the e-bike model's power was certified by...
