    what now

They are a great e-bike Rob, their only weakness being the budget 36 volt NiMh battery and chargers which did give some trouble. But that e-bike built with typical Giant quality was a fantastic bargain at just £600 new.

    Legal ebike?

There are a number of reasons why e-bikes don't comply. One is that we still have in law the 1983 EAPC regulations which specify maximum continuous power of 200 watts, and the test for that being a BS one which really means 200 watts. Most are of course 250 watts rated now and capable of very...

    Powabyke euro

They are still very capable e-bikes Mike, and can still outclass some current bikes for hill climb ability. And lets face it, the battery prices are very attractive compared to lithium, which in the UK range from about £350 to over £1000 for the same voltage and equal usable capacity. Regarding...

What one would be the better second hand buy

I am John, but as you know from our recent communications, less so with each of Panasonic's revisions. So there's a bit of a hinge point now when the advances can become more attractive. For example the latest Impulse unit's greater climb ability and it's gearchange smoothing feature, though...

new battery wanted for Giant lafree Twist

Together with some members I've been doing that for some while Mary. Two of us once got two working ones out of three failures, and the remnants built back into a very presentable e-bike which was donated to a bicycle museum, so all three back in use. My support website on the Lafree may...

    Powabyke euro

No changes in the law that affect you Mike, but I'm not up to date on the best suppliers for suitable SLA batteries, so hopefully someone else will be able to help in that respect. The main thing is to be certain to buy the deep cycle type capable of high discharges, avoiding the similar...

    work, leisure and fun!

Small wheel bikes are naturally better climbers than those with larger 26" to 28" wheels due to the mechanical advantage, so although rated as having a 220 watt motor, it will be much better on hills than that would seem to indicate. You will need to be able to help with reasonable pedal effort...

    'Bike' car

They enjoyed a period of popularity in the 1970s and early 1980s in general ownership, and some imported American ones complete with external ornamental lanterns around the rear section. An old high roof, full windowed hearse repainted in suitable colours would be ideal for Hatti, acting as a...

What one would be the better second hand buy

I think it's generally better to go for the newer technology John. E-bikes are still very much vehicles in development, very different from cars and the like which were refined to high degrees of standardisation in design many years ago. The Impulse unit isn't quite as new as it might appear...

    Cheaper bike

Yes, a variety of reasons Dave. Partly due to busy at times on another interest, the Avatar might give a clue. Partly due to having an operation with a forewarned extremely painful and longish recovery period. Partly due to a conscious decision some while ago to phase down from my previous...

Indeed, and haven't been for more than a decade. I don't know of anything else on the road that breaches laws in so many ways.

new battery wanted for Giant lafree Twist

I think that's very reasonable, considering the work involved for a commercial company and a UK battery price of around £300. It would greatly increase your range and the increased capacity would also lift the performance a bit too. One question though, does that include the charger price...

    Cheaper bike

It was admittedly an early version. The one that d8veh reported on quite recently was the current model though, so perhaps there's variability. However, he does like and recommend it.

    Cheaper bike

They wouldn't be the first. Heinzmann at one time badged an identical motor 700 watts or 400 watts, this confirmed by their UK main agents at the time, Kinetics.

    Cheaper bike

The NuVinci gearchange does stiffen up under load, and that is proportional to the amount of transmission loading. I can imagine that with a more powerful crank unit than the one I tried it with, it could be a bit difficult. d8veh has also reported in this forum the stiffening change under load.

new battery wanted for Giant lafree Twist

It's definitely worth trying Giant at their EU HQ in the Netherlands for a new battery. That's where all the spares stocks are held, for the UK as well.

Police asked me to stop using my bike!!! :( :( :(

As we've all said, it's questionable whether he is a police officer, though he has some historic knowledge of e-bike law so may have been one or possibly is/has been a civilian employee of the police. So it's your option to risk carrying on and challenging him if he bothers you again, or giving...

    Luggage for Giant e-bikes

Have you tried Cambridge Dutchbikes Mike? They are a Dutch company also operating here and have some Dutch luggage items. They also import bikes from there to order, so may be able to bring in what you want. I bought these roomy Dutch panniers from them some years ago:
