Here is a sketch showing wire connections coming from the controller. Should I be concerned that black AND orange connect to the middle socket?

Yes the bike has always had the old style HiGo connectors which have an orientation flat rather than a pip. I've just checked the loom for continuity and there is a path between the socket in the connector going to the display, which I had as not being used, to a pin on the 9 pin connector...

Here is a picture of the eight wires coming away from the controller into the loom. You can see the end of the purple wire as it enters the loom. That's how it has always been.

There is a CR2032 battery inside the display which I did thought was just for the clock but perhaps it supplies operating power as well. At the controller end of the loom I can see the purple wire which is cut off as it emerges from the outer insulation.

Hi Neal, I'm having trouble identifying which pins to jump. A while back I fitted a new wiring loom with HiGo connectors hoping that was causing the error 30 so I have a spare loom. I cut the 5 pin Higo connector off the old loom and the wire colours are not the same as you describe. See below...

Thanks Neal. I am led to believe the new display may be one of a faulty batch so I haven't 100% confidence in it. I've read elsewhere it may be possible to bypass the display by fitting a jumper between two of the connector pins; is that worth a try? If it is which two pins?

Thanks Woosh but I didn't have any of the sensors connected. Am I right to suspect the controller if two of the wires (black and orange) coming out of it are shorted?

Thanks vfr400. I connected the self-learn wires together and raised the back wheel of the ground, switched the battery and display on. The motor ran but I think the drive sprocket went backwards and the cranks didn't rotate. I switched off and disconnected the self-learn wires. Switched back on...

Yes the self-learning wires are present but I haven't used it. I didn't receive any instructions with the kit but I did find a piece on Youtube about how to use self-learning. When I first powered up the kit the motor just clicked a bit but didn't rotate so I swapped over two of the phase wires...

When I'm under way the display indicates the amount of power being consumed, see picture. Under load on a slight gradient the number of bars showing increases to maximum then motor cuts out

A couple of things still don't feel right. Lifting the rear wheel and using the throttle the indicated speed is 16mph but when I'm sat on the bike it only gets up to about 9mph under throttle, I'm 12st BTW. Also, I can be riding along under PAS and motor power is cut momentarily then picks up...

Sorted thanks. I went into the settings (P03 - 0 on the Brainpower controller) and am now getting MPH all the time.

I fitted the King Meter speed sensor but it only shows the speed when the motor is running? I lift the rear wheel and the half twist throttle takes the speed up to 17mph, as soon as I relax the grip and the motor cuts out indicated speed drops to zero. Is this normal?
