Thanks Peter, just noticed there's a controller bag in the packing list which sorts that out.
I always think bags looks like you couldn't be bothered to do it properly :D

I think I tend towards bags - I think the controller boxes look untidy - but each to their own - 2 identical bikes (front hub conversion) one with controller in the battery bag, one with separate controller box

Have to admit the box does look better - depends on how I get on with rivnuts for the battery, if done well then I might consider doing more for the box. Wish there was a 48v battery with the KT controller built in, oh well.

It's personal choice isn't it. Most enclosures have clamping arrangements and brackets. A few just have a couple of holes with cable ties which is a bit naff. The only one that I used rivnuts with was because I mounted it under the down tube below the battery. It was a big box though to fit a 30A KT controller. Swapped it out for a physically smaller controller so loads of room to add other electronic projects in the future.

If I was you I would just use the bag that comes with the kit.

Just get everything working first, then later you can consider relocating the controller/use a box etc. (if you want to). Same goes for cable management, get the kit working and then decide how you are going to tidy up all the cables.

I used this guy's method for adding rivnuts:

I used this on my folder. Slotted straight into the battery rail. They do other types. You have to get one that fits your battery mount.

The separate controller is better in that it is dual voltage but the battery mounted controller is neater.

Thanks I came across that yesterday when saneagle mentioned about the rivnuts - that guy makes it look do-able, the key takeaway I think is not to rush it.

Did you already have a motor wheel in place as there doesn't seem to be an option for that?

On my Cotic Roadrat I use under bar /frame bag to house my TS09 controller and any excess wiring, I find it a handy place as the main trunk cable to the display can run thru it also any battery connection or soldered joint can remain in the dry and out of the way.
I also keep my house and bike lock keys in there when out and about as well as some money and my phone.

It's not worth buying a prebuilt motor wheel from topbike kit. Because of the weight the postage is astronomical. Then you get slammed for import tax as it is not only on the product the postage cost is included for tax as well.

I bought hub motors from them and built my own wheel. Encouragement from here helped. It's not as hard as it looks.

If you are buying a kit you could always buy the right controller for your battery mount separately from them.

Or just stick with the seperate controller. I don't know the rating but if you get the bigger enclosure you can upgrade to a bigger controller later if you feel like it. Opinion on here seems to suggest that 17A for 48V is about perfect. On my main bike I'm running 25A. With a 30A KT reduced to 25A it felt a little bit too much at the lower levels of assist. If I'd stuck with the KT controller I think I would have turned it down by now.

There is also the possibility I might melt something one day.

A good in between controller is the 22a KT TS09 for enclosed spaces , slightly larger and 50% more mosfets to reduce any heating issues . A TS06 makes sense if space for housing it is limited.

That is the beauty of KT, one can mix & match the various products to suit ones requirements. There are so many options.

By now I think I'd have been running the 30A controller at ÷1.33 so that would have been 22.5A. The 22A controller is probably a good choice. Still might melt something with it though.

So with the Aliexpress kit incl the wheel the price is £231 incl shipping - which seems reasonable from what I can tell - do you think there could be additional import tax?

Here it is at only £231 inc shipping. As well as a cassette motor, the KT controller is 17A, so at 48v, it'll give all the hill-climbing you want. Best of all, it has the block connectors for easy testing. One of the pictures in the description shows a torque arm and the packing list says, "zip ties and protection line". I'm wondering if the protection line is a torque arm.

If you click on the seller, they have loads of other stuff too. They're located in Kunteng, so the KT controller factory must be next door.
That link now no longer includes batteries, there are no kits for £231.

One can still buy a complete kit without a battery, buy a battery from Yosepower, stick your new KT controller in the supplied bag and away you go.

It doesn't matter if the battery to controller connecters are different because you can simply buy XT60 to bullet connecter (for example) converters on eBay or Ali

It didn't include the battery from the start mate, eg it's still £231 for 48v motor kit and LCD3 which includes £95 shipping costs without battery.

AliExpress has some sort of deal with HMRC that they charge VAT on anything below £135 including shipping. Anything above that price *should* be subject to import duty.

I think they sometimes ship it piecemeal so it doesn't get picked up or some other type system.

KUNTENG EBIKE FACTORY Store page states there is tax exemption in EU countries - I'm going to message them to double check.
