Following on from this thread http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/electric-bicycles/4443-agattu-drive-problem.html I phoned Lloyd at 50c this morning and he assured me if I was able to change gears, the problem could not be the Nexus Hub and was more likely to be the worn drive or rear sprocket. He agreed to send me a replacement drive sprocket, along with some other items I was waiting for.

When I got home, to my surprise, Scott or Tim, not sure which as my wife didn't ask, had delivered them to my doorstep as they were on route to London. A very impressive service.

I have now replaced the drive sprocket, I decided on an 11 tooth one incidentally, whilst I was at it, I swaped the rear sprocket for an almost new spare, then took the Agattu for quick spin and the problem seems to be solved.

My son will be using it tomorrow to go to work and he will give it a thorough test.

Can't beat a same-day service :) Well done 50c.

Glad to hear you finally got to the bottom of the problem, although I don't understand why turning the sprocket around didn't fix it.

It's good to hear about the excellent service.

I will be interested to hear your opinion on the 11 tooth sprocket, good / bad points etc. Keep us posted.

You will get better chain drive reliability with the 11 tooth sprocket John, and I've just published that on my Panasonic website earlier today. The one disadvantage of the change to a single stage gear reduction in the latest unit is the higher shaft output speed and the too small 9 tooth sprocket that results.

Unfortunately it's impossible to gear a bike with a Nexus hub gear back to legality with the 11 tooth sprocket since the largest standard rear sprocket is a 24 tooth which leaves power cut-off too high, 16.8 mph on a Nexus 7 and 17.6 mph on any Nexus 8 with 28" wheels. Therefore the 11 tooth isn't an option for manufacturers, even with 26" wheels the speeds are still over the legal limit.

Link to new website entry on the sprocket change to 11 tooth.

Hi Aldby, that was me!

I'll be running a few errands in the trusty 50cycles van over the next few days - delivering parts and bikes and picking up a Pro Connect that has been evaluated by a local constabulary over the past couple of months.

And also clipping the tree on my drive when parking at home. I think it will live.
All the best,
Tim

I have always found 50c, and Lloyd in particular extremely helpful and efficient when it comes to repairs, replacements and advice.
