Very nice Harry, I hope you have secure parking, given those beautiful flat spoke quick release wheels.

I'd think the 11 tooth would be good for such a light and agile bike, especially with a fit rider. I found it a bit iffy with the much heavier Agattu and my lesser ability.
.
Yes very secure parking at home and at work. Should get it in about 2 week so let's hope I get on with it better than the Agattu. Looking forward to getting back to electric bikes as I have been without one for a few months now.

After months without one even an SLA Powabyke could be a relief! :D

I'm sure you'll find this one's character very different from the Agattu, it should feel spritely by comparison. Probably best tried as is without any sprocket changes initially, given it's lightness to pedal without power, but the 11 tooth is very quick and easy to try. Fecn did a quick swap for me to try one of his bikes with both on the same hill route.

I am always banging on about how awful the change is on the 7 speed compared to the 8 speed - probably the main reason I got rid of my Agattu. If I got the change wrong the outer gear cable would jump out of the locator and I would have to pop it back in. Andrew Harvey does say that they become much smoother after a fair bit of use so maybe it will improve.

I have just put an order in for the Emotion Sports Max + but that has deuralliers so I will have to change the cassette to change the gearing. Perhaps the 11 sprocket is a better solution and I should try that first. The Agattu did feel very under geared though.
The 11T upgrade is brilliant for me - I am definitely keeping it. I was a bit disappointed when I first got the bike. It felt big, heavy and sluggish compared to my old Giant Lafree. I also hated the hub. The 11T upgrade has sorted out the "sluggish" part. I think I will hold off on the hub sprocket for a week or 2. May go for a 18T, 19T, 20T, or just stick with my 21T.

As for the 7 speed hub, I will persevere for a couple of months to see if it improves. If not, I will replace it with a Alfine 8 or 11. As the bike only cost me £900 I feel that I can afford to junk the annoying bits.

The Emotion Sports Max + looks great. It really shows that something can be done about the weight of full size electric bikes. Shame it does not have an Alfine internal hub though. ;)

Using a 11 cog drive cog for ages

I am glad that people are finding out the joys of the 11 dirve cog. I have been using mine for ages and notice little diffrence to the range (by the change from 9-11 cog)

My new toy is a 15 rear cog. You can even get a 14! (+ all others sizes) for £5 incuding postage

SILVER STURMEY ARCHER BIKE COG / SPROCKET on eBay (end time 24-Jun-10 10:54:00 BST)

I live in Norfolk (we do have small hills) and only use 4 gears. Swaping from a 16 to 15 has swaped an unused low gear to a new downhill tail wind. I find gear 7 goes from about 19-22 mph and this new gear then takes over. With a 11 dirve cog. My new return avarage speed 17 miles to and form work is now 20.5mph (hard work on the way home with a small head wind)

A Correction

The 20.5 is my very best time (trying hard). I usualy get 18-19 mph avarage speed.

On the subject of range just take your charger to work and recharge it there. That is what I do. I hate the lack of zip when you go down to one light.

This week I will pass the 10,000 mile mark on my pro connect.

10,000 on original battery Sort of

My pro connect is now two years old. I am on my third exchange battery.

My first battery failed the 5 light test and 50 cycles changed it for a different one. The exchange one had exactly the same range as the one i swapped (got about 21 miles wight 16 cog) but this one also got exchanged when the power connect burnt out.

My latest exchange has a damaged handle. But it has a range of 22-23 miles on my 15 cog (full power). I think that it is a newer battery and should last for another at least year and I am very happy with it. With 11 drive cog and 15 back cog the bike has never been better. It full of zip and full of fun to ride. The £5 (including postage) from ebay arrived 2 days after I ordered it, go on give the 15 cog a go. Is there any really fit person who could try out the 14 (I am just not fit enough)?

I checked these out a few years ago when I was looking for a small sprocket for my Giant LaFree. However, I found that they were not “dished” and so unsuitable for use on Shimano 7/8 hubs. I would love to get hold of a dished 14T. How have you got around this problem?

I had another 15 mile run the other day mixed hills/flat at first light went at 10.5 miles...it seems this sprocket change is having no effect on the battery and i am just getting round everywhere a lot quicker....sorry..off road :D

I put the 18T hub sprocket on my bike last night - got fed up not having a high down hill gear. So far, I have had no problems getting up any of the hills near me and I am making much better use of the lower gears now. As I suspected, range is not a problem.

hi do you know the width of the 15 tooth as the only small sprocket i have seen was to wide for the chain also if sprocket not dished does it pull chain out of alignment

Hi Jac, I don't think the Sturmey Archer 15T sprocket would be too wide, just that I don't think it is dished. The problem will not really be the chain alignment, but that the chain will snag on the hub. I am very curious to know what Neil has done so that he can use an SA undished 15T.

Just fitted it

It fits fine. Have been sold un-dished 16 cogs by 50 cycles. for a £5 what have you got to loose (oh forgot that b**dy circular cir-clip).

Hi Neil,

I must say that I have never tried to fit an undished sprocket, it is just that I read somewhere it will not work. I have ordered a 14T to try on my Giant LaFree. I will be very pleased it it does work. Know what you mean about the circlip - vicious things.

On my Technium I only have a 7 gear hub and have fitted an 18T to it. In my case I do not see any point going smaller than this and may drop back to 19T or even 20T, unless you know some way of "Chipping" the Panasonic system to give me some more power? An "Off Road" button like some of the hub motor based bikes would be very welcome.

Will post pictures

When my memory card arrives I will post a pictures of the rear cog.

I hate the large circular cir-clip, I can fly across the room when you remove it and also is very difficult to get on again.

I am no expert, but what I do to get these lovely things back on is to hold the clip down firmly with my left hand and with my right hand, I gently ease the clip open with circlip pliers , pressing down all the time with my left hand. It takes a few attempts, but eventually snaps into place.

The 12T sprocket looks really interesting. This would mean a cadence of 52 rpm could be achieved before the controller started to reduce the power - up from about 47.7 rpm with the 11T and 39 rpm with the 9T.

Has anyone tried this?

Is a 13T available? Now that would be good!
