Hi everybody.
Is it normal to get a pulsing effect in the power delivery of the pedelec system.I have tried moving through the gears from low to as high as can comfortably be managed and also tried "ankling" to keep the pedal pressure as constant as possible but still get an audible and physical pulse effect. There are occasions when the power delivery seems to smooth out but I can not see any obvious reason why this happens. This is not a major problem but I just wondered if this was a characteristic of the pedelec system.
Regards.

Yes it is the normal characteristic Styx, deliberately designed that way to accurately track what your leg muscles provide. In that way it's truly bionic, mimicking your body.

The variation you've noticed partly depends on the cadence (pedalling speed). Up to 40 rpm cadence, the motor gives full power so the pulse is more noticeable, but over that the power gradually reduces, lessening the effect.

The other thing affecting the pulse is the pressure you apply, that sensed by it's pedelec mechanism. The more you apply, the more you'll notice the pulse, since the power it provides is directly proportional to what you put in.

You can read the whole story of why it works as it does in my article here

You can read how the unit operates in part of my repair article here. Scroll about two thirds down for that description.

Hi Flecc.
Thanks for the info. After years of riding a conventional bike up these steep hills I don't think I've adapted yet to the assistance from the pedelec system so I'm probably putting a bit too much effort into it.When I get my battery back I'll try riding in a more laid back style.
regards.
