Hello all,

My new pro-connect has done around 200 miles so far and is going very nicely apart from a reluctance to settle in 4th gear, this being the gear I generally use to pull away in. Quite often it seems not to have changed properly, even though 4th is indicated, and then graunch in as I'm half way across a roundabout or a junction, which is most unsettling. I've put a 16t sprocket on so it may be a chain tension issue. I only took one link out when changing the sprocket but I did notice that you can up the tension on the chain tensioner spring by moving it round a notch - that seemed to make it tight enough. Anyway, I'll try taking another link out and see if that helps.

Fiddling with the bike when stationary I notice that gear 4 seems a bit 'different' from the rest - it makes slightly more noise changing in or out.

Has anyone else had any trouble with one of these hubs? I'd love to understand in more detail how they work - are there any good sites out there I should look at?

Cheers

Pete

I took two links out when changing to an 18 T sprocket as I thought it was a bit too slack with one removed.

When in 4th gear, have you set the two yellow markers together on the rear hub? If you look down on the hub on the chain side, you will see a window. In 4th, the two yellow lines should be together. If not, adjust the cable on the selector.

I've done the thing with the markers but it doesn't really seem to help. I'm having difficulty with some of the other gears now. Perhaps it's just that I'm not used to hub gears but it seems really slow to change. I'll take another link out and see if that helps. Thanks for posting

They do take a while to run in and free up Pete. Shimano like to give the impression that it's not necessary to stop pedalling while changing gear, but it is advisable to pause pedalling to allow time for each gear to fully engage. Judging from what you've said, that isn't always happening.

Be patient with it for a while and see if it improves with time and wear.
