Just wondering if anyone from Alien Bikes visit this forum on an official level. I notice most the other larger firms hang about here, long may they do so. I think it gives a massive boost to their reputation if they actively work with the end consumer.

The website says "I made this bike" not "we" or "us" and the contact page is just an email link. That usually indicates a one man co.

They are a reasonably size company now and are very busy. I know for a fact that Jim the manager reads this forum all the time. I have mentioned to him that either him or the boss(Bob) should register and be made available to members with questions. I ran a business for 30 years so I know a little of how it works by now and a presence from them( now that they are a major player with a good range of bikes)really does boost peoples confidence and must add to their sales.

Just my opinion for what it`s worth:D

Eh! Well you'd be wrong there on both counts.......

Electric Bicycles - Contact & Policies
Nah, only wrong on the one count. :p

I was looking at alienbikes.com by mistake earlier, which does only have an email link. I thought it seemed different!

Yet Alienbikes.co.uk tells us "I got on the net and found a company in China who could sell me motors and another one which had controllers and yet another one which had a throttle etc. I imported a sample of each and modified my Claud Butler."

Hence my having had the impression it was one man in a lockup. It's only when you scroll down past the video that the company sounds bigger:

"AlienOcean are now one of the longest established independent electric bicycle and e-bike kit sellers in the U.K. and operate out of a 5000 sq ft warehouse and distribution centre in central Scotland."

They've posted a half page advert in the latest Auto Express magazine, so they must be doing well :)

When I told my Scottish friends about the bikes one lass knew the town where they used to be based in as she lived in the area.

Alien have definitely expanded and moved into bigger premises.

Was a few months ago, they wanted to buy bikes too (as they could get the bikes and support their local/national business) but found them out of stock at the time.

The couple who wanted them are tall as well so the big frame sizes would be idea. are they restocked now (or "the now" as they say up there :D?)

Yep, they certainly appear restocked now, a mostly different range of bikes from last years offerings. The Aurora does look a nice bike, though I'm sticking with my GSII for the foreseeable future.

Jim has certainly referred to pedelecs postings in previous emails I've received from him, though I don't recall seeing any postings from him or any representative from Alien on here.

The Aurora is a nice bike (it would be a good bike at 250Watt) I like the way you can adjust the steering tube and stem for a nice high ride position if you like. It`s very sharp to pull away on pedelec on any power setting but nice and subtle on throttle which is nice for traffic. I was out on it tonight, low setting gentle amble at around 10mph, med setting an easy 18mph and high well over 20mph without trying much. The bike definitely rides nice over rough lumps and bumps and the gears(although just Shimano tourney) really are slick which I think is because the block is decent. I didn`t think I`d like the switch over from pedelec to throttle but to be honest on this power it`s actually nice to be on throttle only at times with full control because trust me the torque when in pedelec mode is quite stunning. It is quite a substantial bike to be honest with a decent set of lights built in. You`d be hard pushed with this hub if it was a front wheel type. The motor is a touch noisier than a standard 250Watt hub but you soon forget it:D

I have several bikes and I ride them to suit my mood or when in a hurry or just ambling along so to speak. I take the Aurora on a certain route where the hills are a bit more punishing. Some people like to input a fair amount of energy but I`ve had all that and worn the teeshirt:D I just want to ride around the countryside and enjoy the freshair and views(now I`m not a smoker;) even my twin hub powertrek can`t compete with the aurora:eek:

Go test ride one but watch out for that push when you are in pedelec and start to pedal mid corner.

Overlander I have a Alien GSII and it is a very good bike so i dont think you would be diisappointed with the new bikes they have, but if you are local there is the The Electric Cycle Company in Granton Road, Edinburgh. The guys there are very helpful and have a few different bikes to try out. I did and still went for the Alien but its helpful to see what else is out there.

I got sick of this on my '08 905se, so now ride exclusively in low pedelec, and use the throttle to regulate the power. It's interesting that this still hasn't been addressed by the controler manufacturers, as you'd think it would be simple to add a feature that ramps in the power, rather than just switching it on.

'Power being nothing without control' as 'they' say, whoever 'they' are.

Depending how the controllers work it could be added as an aftermarket feature by varying the input control voltage - I suspect the reality is that the controllers are made in bulk for a ruthlessly competitive market and any extra component count inside the box and subsequent rise in price could cost the manufacturer a bulk order if the price wasn't right.

Also they are safety critical electronic devices and so Western customers may (rightly) insist an addition to the main design would require extra testing. you would not want a fault to develop where this circuit failed and caused the power to jam on 100%! - yes on a Wisper the red button is there in case this should happen (it has done very occasionally due to faulty throttles) but it would still be a very alarming thing to experience.. (does every other e-bike today have this safety feature?)

Decent brakes should be enough to tame a runaway, even if a faulty controller ignores the microswitches in the brakes.

IME the controllers do ramp the speed its just that the ramp is very steep. Take my GSII the ramp starts from an approx cadence of 20 and tops out at 80 and as its a constand ramp trying to hold cadence at say 60 when pedaling air is very difficult if not impossible, the only solution is to play with gearing or the pedelec sensor as Dave did...

What mode do you end up mainly using with the alien bikes, throttle or pedelec. One other question, the aurora has the two modes but can you mix them, as i noticed someone said they used the throttle to control the power in pedelec mode. I thought it was one or the other.

What are the assist powers, i am mainly interested in pedelec mode as i do want to get a lot fitter but some of the hills in my area are severe and rule out sensible commuting on a normal bike. If i go round the hills it adds another 4 miles on and things just start to get ridiculous. The e-bike is the perfect solution, thats why i am tending towards the aurora as its advertised as a hill climber and thats the whole problem on my route. I plan on cycling 85-90% of the way on low assist but on the hills all the help possible so i arrive at work in reasonable condition
