Battery insulation

Seeing as our batteries are all affected by cold temperatures, has anybody tried insulating their battery in any way? I wondered about wrapping some insulation material around it on cold mornings to see if I could get the warm-weather performance in winter.
Anybody out there tried it?

Yes, a number have tried it, but without much success. The amount of insulation it's possible to add is soon overcome by the cold air, especially when it's down near freezing point.

Someone recently was considering using a chemical reaction heat source to warm the battery, but I doubt it was tried.

This simple insulating jacket was recently reported on the German Pedelec Forum at Isolierung für Panasonic Akku (10Ah) [Archiv] - Pedelec-Forum

Made from 5mm neoprene with velcro fastenings. I think there is a claim of up to 10 km range in cold conditions. (I cant read German and the Google translation is not very clear.)

Perhaps one could add a heater mat under the neoprene powered off the battery. I am not sure though if the Ah spent countering the heat loss would be less Ah lost if battery left to get cold.
