Very good points Straylight, only a tiny number of commuters will think of their e-bike as an essential, and those who I know have abandoned theirs for the moment due to battery prices illustrate what you say.

The HP option would be good for them, though the Credit Sale option, that is no deposit and equal monthly payments starting after 30 days would probably be even more attractive.

Most 0% deals are financed by those who fail to clear them by the allotted date and then fall subject to HP at a high interest rate, so there's not necessarily any cost to the supplier.

Another point about leasing is that they attract VAT, which generally cannot be reclaimed by Joe Public. This won't matter if the purchase price is based on the VAT exclusive price, but would probably require legislation, this from a government that can't legislate effectively on the legality of ebikes in the first place...

I have never said that a sound lithium e-bike battery can be bought for £100.

Please don't say I have.

Possibly better value for the customer is to pay 25% deposit and the balance over 18 months at a low interest rate. Now if Wisper were to introduce that scheme, I for one would be very interested. ;) :)

As a small business man ( Im just over 4ft ) Ive tried this for other things and the rate we have been offered in the past is not as good as you can personally get by knocking on your bank managers door.

On the subject of low interest loans, the loss of immediate income may not have to be bourne by the manufacturer themselves, as there are finance companies that provide this service. For example, I've just paid such a loan off (0% interest) after having laser eye surgery 3 years ago, and the loan agreement wasn't with the clinic, but with a finance house called Hitachi Capital. Now I've no doubt that the clinic was charged a fee for the service,
I wonder if this is is all carefully thought through by the Japanese, who presumably also provide the clinic with finance for the machinery used for the laser eye treatment?

Thanks Bigbee, no problem, I responded quickly because I didn't want anyone to think I had said that. I've been quite closely associated with lithium battery issues for some while and know just how much expensive effort has been put into developing the better ones, not to mention the high costs of the failures for e-bike manufacturers.
