Hi

Curious to know how you are averaging 19mph and if the bike gives you any drag after reaching 15-17 mph?

The power cut-out feeling is only really perceived when you are riding at a speed just around that cut-out point. If you are still accelerating at that point (down hill, on a flat portion of road) you just pedal over and beyond without feeling it. If you are worried about feeling it you will, if you are just getting on with the ride you won't notice it.

Point two is use your gears. You will need to be in the right gear to continue accelerating and often when you begin with electric assistance you are in too high a gear up to cut-out speed. It is just part of the learning curve.

How you average over 15 is simple. If you go down hill at 30 mph for 10 mins you cover 5 miles. Turn round and cycle back at 15 mph it takes 20 mins. So 10 miles in 30 mins equals 20 mph average.
So a legal bike can make you super fast with hills?

Hmmm! If I can go downhill at 30 mph, there's no way I can go back up at 15mph.

My bike is very energy efficient. On the flat unassisted 17-20mph down hill gentle 25ish with little effort. Steep hill it hits 50! Gentle rise 16 mph and steep climb 7 mph. Because a fat 50+ athsmatic needs all the cheating he can get. And it's still legal Except pedal reflectors.

The cutoff speed on the BBS01 can be adjusted to whatever you want, so it can be set to provide assistance over 15mph.

Ok that's good to know, I will be starting my build as soon as the kit arrives so will post progress and compare notes if that's ok?

Any problems fitting the BBS on the Cube? No chainring issues, etc?

Was looking at the prebuilt Cube's but think this route would save me a few hundred and give me a nicer bike to ride, more in keeping with my current cyclocross commuter.

No, no problems at all that I recall. Chainring line was fine and it all went together smoothly. Your thought process was pretty much exactly the same as mine - I thought I could end up with a bike that fitted my requirements better than buying off the shelf, and cheaper to boot.

Thanks. Really useful thread this - the Cube was one of a few bikes that I thought might work nicely - though I may still find myself heading for drop bars - and this has confirmed my feelings. I'll be keeping an eye on the sales in the next few weeks, see what drops to a bargain price.

So Specialised Sirrus purchased, 8fun 250w crank motor fitted, new tyres and other bits and bobs and we're off. (£880 all in)

Two 17 mile commutes done averaging an hour a time and some around town short jaunts completed without drama. My system has a 3 speed setting and I have been using it in the highest power mode for the most part. The battery is behaving very well.

I have two hills to climb at the beginning of my commute and the system works well. I need to put effort in but the motor gives enough assistance to make the climbs quickly recoverable.

On the flat it gives me decent acceleration up to the legal limit and I don't get as much of the overhead above 17mph as I did when testing pre-builds due to the bike's relative lightness.

I will be doing a six week stint starting next week so will log in at regular intervals. Enjoying it so far!image.jpeg
