until the recent arrival of the X series your average Powabyke rider was +60 years old and most of them older still! Indeed although Powabyke has a good reputation amongst that demographic is is precisely that brand which has led to people in some regions (ironically those where Powabyke appears to have a strong market presence) viewing e-bikes as machines for the elderly!
I dont think Powabyke targeted the older market...All of their PR and advertising showed 20 and 30 year old people on bikes....I guess it is just a fact of life that, even todays, electric bikes appeal to middle aged and older people, not many spring chickens riding electric bikes

That's for sure, and this forum's age profile has always shown it to be true.

Re: the mileage comparison, my brother who was a keen club cyclist did far less annual miles than me on electrics. Although his run distances were usually far greater, I used the e-bike far more often, both for pleasure and many utility journeys like shopping. You don't see many lycras and drop handlebars at the supermarket!

whether or not they targeted that market that is what they got and commercial sense dictates that must have been the premium customer segment for their business, at least until the X-series appeared.

You will be hard pressed to find people below the age of 45-50 riding a non X-series Powabyke (I only know of one young person who has done so) whilst even though e-bikes remain popular with the older generations there are many more 30 and 40 somethings riding Wispers, Kahlkoffs and Cytronex models, and some who bought X-series Powabykes....

40 is considered middle aged!
.
depends on what demographics people use these days...

my younger sister works in marketing and they now consider those in their early 40s to still be in the youth market, middle age from the late 40s to the 70s, and elderly people 75-80 upwards - the definition of "elderly" usually only starting when people require medical care of some sort due to age-related health issues...

this is reflected in a lot of advertising I've seen recently..

given changing lifestyles and the improvement in health and longevity I don't think this is too inaccurate an assesment..

I've seen the marketing view, but 40 is undeniably in the middle of the average lifespan, so still middle aged. Before too long before I'll be middle aged for the second time.

I work as an IT manager for a group of companies providing care for the older generation, and thus get a very good insight as to lifespans from the databases - in this area the average lifespan actually seems to be 85-90+ with people reaching 100 not at all uncommon! And much of this seemingly despite drinking, smoking and the use of recreational substances. I expect the same is true for affluent areas such as London and the South East, with perhaps the figure being dragged down by shorter lifespans in poorer regions.

Average lifespan UK:

79.4 years overall

77.2 years, Male

81.6 years, Female

That's 80 years to me, with 40 dead in the middle (age). :D

Those are the figures used by pension actuaries, insurance companies and government, and understating those would prove very expensive for them, so you can be sure they are as high as can be.

I'm aware of discrepancies of up to 10 years betwen rich and poor areas, and I suppose there's also the effect of RTCs and violence to drop the average figure even in rich areas - for instance in my wider circle of friends just over a dozen have died before their 30s, approximately half through RTC's and the other half through drug overdoses and violence. The roads kill a lot of young people, even those who do not otherwise lead "riskier" lifestyles..

I wonder if regular cyclists (obviously those lucky enough not to be involved in RTCs!) live much longer than their non-cycling counterparts?

Yes, there are big differences between some areas, but the low expectancy areas are not a big proportion so are small in overall effect. That's why the averages are still used for actuarial purposes. Accidental deaths have hardly any effect on the average life expectancy of overall 60 million population.

From what I've seen cyclists do tend to live longer than average, but I guess that will be true for all who exercise regularly at moderate levels.

Regular cyclists who can avoid exhaust fumes probably live longer than those who commute on congested roads?

80 is the current life expectancy but that is projected to change with improvements in medicine and primary healh, the baby boomers are likely to exceed it as their affluence will help them live longer. I consider myself middle aged even though I'm not 40 yet, my kids make me feel it. :)

Closed shop

BEBA will be welcoming new members next week.

We have several companies ready to pay their dues and sign up, everything will be in place on Tuesday to open BEBA to the entire industry as long as companies are prepared to sign up and adhere to the BEBA code of practice.

I can't wait to get some more help and input!

Best regards

David
